It always makes me laugh with the choices for "safe" music my local conservative grocery company chooses without understanding the lyrics. Things like Donovan's "Sunshine Superman" and "Mellow Yellow" which references LSD and a vibrator; Beatles "Got to Get You into My Life", an ode to pot; "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay", contemplating suicide; etc..

My local supermarket has surprised me twice in the past three years. Usually they play generic nothing supermarket music that completely fails to register as I do my shopping. However, the two tracks which have stood out were:

The Smiths - There is a Light That Never Goes Out

The Cure - Boys Don't Cry

One of the checkout obasan must like her 80s British post punk.

I've heard "Achilles Last Stand" by Led Zeppelin at the grocery store, so it would take a lot to surprise me.

I once heard Guns N' Roses cover of Ain't It Fun played in a shopping centre. As you may know, that song contains the rudest word in the whole english language...

I once heard a Caribbean style instrumental of "Black Hole Sun" at Disneyland. I still remember sitting there in Tomorrowland trying to place the very familiar melody.

My wife and I were eating at some restaurant a few years back and Crazy Train by Ozzy came on. When that song came out, the odds of that happening some day were pretty long. Seems Ozzy went from a crazed devil worshipping madman to suitable for family casual dining in under 30 years

I once heard Dylan's Positively Fourth Street in my local Stop & Shop.

You know as well as me you'd rather see me paralyzed goes really well with the family shopping experience.

I haven't heard in store music in a supermarket/grocery shop for years. I can remember hearing "Green Manalishi" a few times..

My local suburban grocery store plays a deep track mix that floors me sometimes. Songs I've heard off the top of my head:

I'm Waiting For My Man - VU
    several songs from Forever Changes
    Omaha - Moby Grape
It's A Long Way To the Top etc. - AC/DC
    Obviously Sweet Marie - Dylan

The list could on and on. Everytime I'm in there I here at least several tracks that make me think "does anyone else in here grasp what they're hearing?". My best guess is that it's some form of satellitte feed. It's not programmed by anyone at the store.

My local fish 'n' chip shop was playing 'Kind of Blue' one time I went in, which was a nice surprise. Last time I went it was Eagles Greatest Hits, which is ok, but not quite as (well, in fact, nowhere near as) cool.
