It's funny, I never thought of the narrator of this song being old, just someone who as Jon Mendelsohn put it in a liner note, "who knows himself all too well".

Ray Davies did write a quite chilling song about being old called 'Where Did My Spring Go".

Besides "Hello in There", John Prine also wrote a couple more that I can think of about old people: "Angel From Montgomery" and "Grandpa Was A Carpenter".

And the Iron City Houserockers with Joe Grushecky's "Old Man Bar".

Hmm, you may be right. There's nothing in the lyrics to directly mark the narrator as old. I just always assumed he was, which perhaps says something about my ideas about age and aging:

Dirty old river, must you keep rolling, rolling into the night
People so busy, make me feel dizzy, taxi light shines so bright
But I don't need no friends
As long as I gaze on Waterloo Sunset, I am in paradise
Every day I look at the world from my window
Chilly chilliest evening time, Waterloo sunset's fine

Terry meets Julie, Waterloo Station, every Friday night
But I am so lazy, don't want to wander, I stay at home at night
    But I don't feel afraid
As long as I gaze on Waterloo Sunset, I am in paradise
Every day I look at the world from my window
Chilly chilliest evening time, Waterloo sunset's fine.

Millions of people swarming like flies `round Waterloo underground
Terry and Julie cross over the river where they be safe and sound
And they don't need no friends
As long as they gaze on Waterloo Sunset, they are in paradise

I prefer "Older Guys" by the Flying Burritos, ED.

You might like "Old Dan's Records" by Gordon Lightfoot.

    If these haven't been mentioned.

    opening lyrics

    My grandpa, he's 95
    And he keeps on dancin'
    He's still alive

    My grandma, she's 92
    She loves to dance
    And sing some, too

    I don't know
    But I've been told
    If you keep on dancing
    You'll never grow old

Well, there's always "The Southwestern Geriatrics Arts and Crafts Festival," the concluding suite from the Joe Byrd and the Field Hippies album, incorporating "The Sing-Along Song," "The Elephant at the Door," "Leisure World," and "The Sing-Along Song (reprise)." But it really is a rather harsh (and somewhat heartless) satire on the older generation, and I imagine that Mr. Byrd would probably find it a bit embarrassing to hear today!
