Many people refer to Supper's Ready as an example of a song that occupies an entire side of an LP, sometimes saying Genesis were the first ones to do that.
Actually there have been some other cases before that, A Plague Of Lighthouse Keepers from VDGG 'Pawn Hearts' predates Supper's Ready and i even consider the medley on side 2 of Abbey Road a prototype of the songs above.

Are there any other examples of early side-long songs that never get mentioned?

Echoes from Pink Floyd's "Meddle" (Oct 1971), and Jethro Tull's "Thick as a Brick" (March 1972) predate "Supper's Rready" (Oct 1972).

Isn't there actually a short instrumental (Horizons) BEFORE Supper's Ready on Side 2 of Foxtrot?

Not sure if this counts, but on The Allman Brothers' Live at Fillmore East, Whipping Post takes up an entire side...

Revelation from Love's Da Capo album (early 1967) is one of the first that I can think of.

Though not traditional rock (more like experimental folk), Sandy Bull was doing sidelong pieces like Blend as early as '63.

Remember The Future (Part one) and (Part two).... by Nektar.

Each part is a whole side.

The first? I'm sure I have some classical titles that fill an entire side and pre-date the 1970's. I assume the OP means the rock genre, specifically?

Also for jazz there was "A Love Supreme" (1965) and Side 2.

    G'day,

The usual suspects in prog rock get mentioned often in threads like these.

Dylan got into the one-song-to-a-side racket with Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands from Blond On Blond back in '66, but that was barely 11 minutes IIRC.

Of course classical records had side-long tracks going back to the early days.

And jazz: Jimmy Smith's The Sermon and Red Garland's All Morning Long back in the 1950's had 20 minute side-long tracks.

"The Return of the Son of Monster Magnet" may have "only" been 12 mins. in length, but it did nevertheless take up all side four of the Mothers "Freak Out" in 1966.

Donna Summer on two of her 1970s albums:

"Love to Love You Baby"...Side 1 of that LP over 17 minutes long.
"Try Me, I know We Can Make It"....Side 1 of the LP "A Love Trilogy" also over 17 minutes long.

MacArthur Park Suite (studio version) would be another one from Donna Summers Live LP, but probably doesn't count as it incorporates two other songs intertwined in the main motif.

    Probably meant rock.

But the OP did not ask for the first. He asked for ones that are rarely mentioned and at least half the posts so far mention whole album side that are very well known - like Whipping Post and Thick As A Brick.

Edit: He actually said 'never' but I assume he meant 'rarely' ;-)

Paul Butterfield's 'East-West' takes up 13:10 of side 2 of the original LP.

NOT a full side, but certainly the longest 'early' tune I can think of in the 'rock' field, other than The Mothers.

    Just sayin'

I think "Bo's Beat" (14:23) on the Bo Diddley/Chuck Berry album Two Great Guitars may be the earliest (1964) long tune in the "rock" field.

"Chuck's Beat" on the same album runs 10:39.

Neither takes up the whole side though.
