Songs that were regional hits and then re-recorded for nation-wide release

A little while ago I found out that Smokey Robinson And The Miracles recorded Shop Around in 1960 for release in Detroit and then re-recorded it in 1961 for national release (which is the version we all know).

I thought this was fascinating because until very recently I had no idea that the "Detroit Version" of the song existed.

Does anyone have any other examples of songs recorded for release in a specific region and then re-recorded for nation-wide release? Especially if the "regional version" is obscure/rare/forgotten?
