In reference to posts about Iggy Pop's Lust For Life:
    Hunt Sales on Drums.
There are times when Bowie goes for the BIG, up front drums.
Same era, check out Breaking Glass, What in the world, and Speed of Life. Dennis Davis on drums.

Just about any song on Supertramp's "Crime of the Century." The wide dynamic range sets the drums on a pedestal whenever they kick in.

At least half the songs mentioned don't feature acoustic drums but rather triggered electronic samples, which may or may not even have been played live.

I'd add Joe Satriani's "Freinds" to this list. MASSIVE, real-sounding drums played great in a great-sounding room with classic Andy Johns production.

The thread doesn't say anything about acoustic drums only

And everybody knows that Rick Allen had a special electronic drum kit since he had to play with one arm.
Rick never used "samples", he played everything :agree:

I'm pretty ignorant to how the tracks were actually recorded, to be honest. I just assumed that the majority of it was sequenced since some of the parts obvioulsy are. If he tracked them, that's pretty cool:). The actual drums sounds on Hysteria and Adrenalize (with the exception of some cymbals)are electronic samples, though. He didn't actually record acoustic samples until the last 10 years or so. There's a good article in Modern Drummer where he talked about it. Cheers!

I Love It Loud ONLY on Creatures Of The Night. The "remaster" found on Smashes Thrashes and Hits CD - they de-balled the drums! Sounds like Carr was hitting electronic drums oppossed to the echo chamber on the original.

"All Day and All of the Night" – The Kinks

I traditionally have characterized the drums on this track as kicking you in the stomach (in a very good way!). But close enough to the OP's description.

The drums on the old (LP) mix of The Song Remains The Same. Listening to the old cd right now and wow, just wow. The drum sound is incredible. Really powerful. There is one point in Moby Dick where the drums are rather quiet and SUDDENLY there's this BIG drum hit. Fantastic.

I like your choice of words here... "deballed"....

at least you didn't say "de-nutted"

you're right, I think there's another song or two from "smashes, thrashes and hits", that they squeezed some of the testosterone from

Apart from Someone Saved My Life Tonight, I also like the drums on We All Fall in Love Sometimes and Curtains from the same album.

I also like a lot the punchy drums toward the end of Dire Straits' Private Investigations.

This has probably been mentioned but one of the first and greatest snare shots in rock: Elvis Presley's Hound Dog.
