I was reminded of this topic while playing a cheap 70s compilation tonight, which included on it the Hall & Oates track, She's Gone. While I expected the 45 version, the comp instead included the version from the album, which if you're familiar with it, you know is significantly different from the version most of us know. So, what other singles out there are dramatically different from the version of the song included on the album. By this, I don't mean the single edit, which just lops off the end, a la Don McLean's American Pie, or songs in which they changed a word to make it acceptable for radio play such as Pink Floyd's Not Now John or Charlie Daniel's The Devil Went Down to Georgia, or songs in which a verse was removed to make the song shorter, but rather in which it is clear the song was completely rerecorded and altered for the single.

Other examples of this that come to mind include one or more of the hits off of Jewel's first record, and as I recall, one of Faith Hill's last hits which added a vocoder to create a different effect. Other examples?

Paul Revere and the Raiders "Great Airplane Strike." IIRC, different sound effects were on the 45 single and the ending was different.

Good thread, you should get a lot of responses on this one.

Dire Strats' first hit ("Sultans of Swing"). The single was a different recording to the album version.

    "Space Oddity"--David Bowie"

Not only is the 45 a shorter version, but portions of the Lp mix are blended together at the fade-out....pretty wild, but it did make the Bubbling Under in Billboard during 1969, his first US chart single....

Three different mixes of Version 2: 45 version came first, followed by the AMERICAN WOMAN Lp version, and then, years later, the Quad mix.

The original "No Time" appears on the CANNED WHEAT album(Version 1), a completely different recording.

Which brings me to "No Sugar Tonight", which is a completely different edit, deftly removing "New Mother Nature" with which it's interpolated on the AW Lp.

I didn't know this one. Is the single version available on CD, perhaps on the greatest hits?

The 45 version can be found on MONEY FOR NOTHING, and probably the later comp as well.

I'm not so sure that's an alternate take. Haven't played it in awhile, but the only thing I noticed of any significance, at the time, was that the Lp version--oddly enough, very unusual--fades earlier than the single mix. And the single mix does seem a tad different.

The 45 "studio version" cooks! The LP version with fake crowd noise really sucks....

"Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye"---The Casinos Mono single version is different take than the stereo Lp version. Not uncommon in those days....

I've got probably hundreds of these....this could be a long, long thread...

    The Beatles - Revolution (obvious)

Bob Dylan's "Mixed Up Confusion" is a different take on the ORIGINAL "Biograph" box - the remaster uses the correct single take.

Jimi Hendrix's deleted "Izabella/Stepping Stone" single are entirely different mixes on the album.

Nirvana's "Aneurysm" is a different take on the single b-side and album.

Pearl Jam's "Jeremy" not only has an expletive removed on the single/video version...it's also an entirely different mix.

I can't believe no one has mentioned any Beach Boys yet...

Be True To Your School: single includes The Honeys as Cheerleaders (Raw Raw Raw Raw, Sis Boom Bah!)
Help Me, Rhonda: "Today" album version has it spelled Ronda. "Summer Days (and Summer Nights)" LP uses the single version.
Little Saint Nick: 1963 single mix includes sleighbells and other percussion that is mixed out of the 1964 album mix.

    "Creeque Alley"---Mamas & Papas

Obvious one: stuff added to the mix not on either mono or stereo Lp version. And sounds like a different mix even if that extra stuff weren't there....
