    Jim Ford - Harry Hippie

The song was written by Jim Ford for Bobby Womack as a dedication to Bobby's brother Harry. Bobby Womack recorded the song as the closing track of his 1972 album "Understanding".
Jim Ford's original 1970 recording was first released in 2008 on "Point of No Return", a Bear Family compilation of previously unreleased masters, a lost 45 and rare demos.

"Harry Hippie lies asleep in the shade
Life don't bug him, know he's got it made
    Always thinking about nothing particular
Some nights he goes and sells a free press on Sunset"

    Curtis Mayfield - Billy Jack

Opening track from his very fine 1975 album "There's No Place Like America Today".
A somber and slow-burning song, one of his best.

"Up in the city they called him Boss Jack
But down home he was an alley cat
Ah, didn't care nothing about being black
    Oh, Billy Jack"

I’ve been playing this song over and over again all weekend. Love it - can’t get it out of my head .

Check this superb performance from 1971 recorded at then BBC studios. Love the set up of the drums - never seen toms set up like that before - rock n roll !

I like to try and think of the more obscure. After all, a dozen prior pages may well have thrown up the more obvious names and nominations; David Watts, Peter Pumpkinhead, Billy Hunt and the like. This is simply "Tom" by east-coast grungers Codeine and it helps that I love the song anyway.

Fairport Convention - Crazy Man Michael

Closing track from their fourth album "Liege & Lief", released in 1969 on Island Records.
Written by Richard Thompson and Dave Swarbrick.

"Within the fire and out upon the sea
    Crazy man Michael was walking
He met with a raven with eyes black as coals
    And shortly they were a-talking"
