The first time I ever heard Pagliaro's "Some Sing, Some Dance" I could have sworn it was a George Harrison song.... the vocal resemblance was uncanny!

I also remember hearing Chilliwack's "Fly at Night" and thinking it sounded a lot like Neil Young, even though I was pretty sure it wasn't him.

And I know a lot of people who thought America's "A Horse With No Name" was Neil Young as well. (Not me, though) :p

    any others?

Corinne Bailey Rae's "Put Your Records On" sounds like early Nelly Furtado, kinda like "I'm Like a Bird."

Pink's "U + Ur Hand" sounds like Pat Benatar.

I thought "I Can Help" by Billy Swan was a new single by Ringo Starr when I first heard it in 1974.

I thought "Take a Little Rhythm" by Ali Thomson (1980) was a new single by Paul McCartney.

And I thought "Gemini Dream" by the Moody Blues (1981) was the latest single by Electric Light Orchestra.

There's that song by Stone Temple Pilots that they sing about "dogs begin to smell her" or something. I couldn't believe that wasn't Pearl Jam.

"Lies" by The Knickerbockers probably threw us all for a loop.

I really thought Uptown Girl was a new Four Seasons track. Billy Joel nailed it dead on.

The first time I heard a Magazine song - The Light Pours Out Of Me- I was familiar with the Magazine-influenced Simple Minds, and I figured it was one of their early rarities.

When I first heard John Parr's "St. Elmo's Fire" I thought I was listening to a new Foreigner song.

John Parr wrote the lyrics and his inspiration for the song was Canadian athlete Rick Hansen who was confined to a wheelchair. They met when Rick was setting out on a journey around the world (his "Man in Motion" tour) to raise public awareness of spinal cord injuries.

    John Parr
"St Elmo's Fire (Man In Motion)"

Growin' up, you don't see the writing on the wall
Passin' by, movin' straight ahead, you knew it all
But maybe sometime if you feel the pain
You'll find you're all alone, everything has changed
Play the game, you know you can't quit until it's won
Soldier on, only you can do what must be done
You know in some way you're a lot like me
You're just a prisoner and you're tryin' to break free

I can see a new horizon underneath the blazin' sky
I'll be where the eagle's flying higher and higher
Gonna be your man in motion, all I need is a pair of wheels
Take me where my future's lyin', St. Elmo's Fire

  14. "Love Is Like Oxygen" by Sweet is a dead-ringer for ELO.

A buddy heard Billy Joel sing "Goodnight Saigon" (title correct?) and thought it was Bowie because of the signal processing of the vocal.

I knew who it was before I heard it, but "Queen Bitch" by Bowie is a dead-ringer for the Velvet Underground, and completely on purpose.

When I first heard "It's My Life" by Talk Talk, I wondered what Roxy Music album it was from.

I thought for sure John Cafferty's "On the Dark Side" was a new Springsteen single.

And, in a bit of gender confusion, I thought Todd Rundgren's "I Saw the Light" was Carole King!

The Hollies "Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress"...I was sure it was by CCR, even though they no longer existed.

The Beatles "Yellow Submarine"...anybody but the Beatles, despite the unmistakable sound of Ringo's singing.

My dad for years thought that 'Say You Don't Mind' by Colin Blunstone was Helen Shapiro

'Run Through The Light' from Yes's Drama, the bit at the end from 3:44, sounds almost identical to Midge Ure-era Ultravox, but a year or so before Midge joined Ultravox! (Try it!)
