That's fair enough and I would agree.
I should have mentioned that I was 10 years old during that period, so styles and the poignancy of the lyrics were a little out of my reach at the time.

I thought Western Union by The Five Americans was The Monkees. Cool song.

Steve Alaimo's "Nobody's Fool" is a dead ringer for The Box Tops

  4. Steely Dan's "Do It Again" I used to think was a Santana tune.

When I was a kid and heard 21st Century Schizoid Man with King Crimson for the first time on a transistor radio I thought it was a new track by John Lennon.

No Time by the Guess Who sounded like Buffalo Springfield to me, particularly the guitars and harmonies.

At least once a year I have to try and convice someone that "Cats in the Cradle" is NOT by Cat Stevens..

    They never believe me.

99% of the time, the people who don't believe me, downloaded the track off limewire

Harry Nilsson "Without You". I could have sworn this song was by Air Supply or one of those "soft" rock bands in the late 70's or early 80's.

The first time I heard "Smells Like Team Spirit" it was coming out of a car radio and I thought it was the Kinks.

When I first heard "Pretty Bad Boy" by Goddo, I could've sworn it was actually the J. Geils Band. I couldn't remember the song's title at the time (I just knew it had a kid's voice somewhere in the middle) but I was so certain it had to be the JGB that I asked my then-GF to play me every song from a JGB record she owned. It was pretty frustrating when none of the songs were the one I was looking for. :p

Back in the day when you scanned the radio dial of your car and landed on some new song on your favorite station, after it started.....

"Everybody Wants to Rule the World": I thought it was Joe Jackson the first time I heard it.
"West End Girls": I thought it was Grace Jones the first time I heard it.

    Any other admissions out there?

He Knows You Know by Marillion.

First time I heard it, I thought it was Peter Gabriel, and thought "nice...he's moving back to a Genesis type sound..."

I felt the same way when I heard my first song by this band. Something very Gabriel about his voice.

Maybe it's just me... I always thought Coldplay, whom I'm not a fan of whatsoever always tried to get that Bono Vox U2 sound. It never fooled me once. Just mentioning the singer Chris Martin seemed to try an mimic Bono. Others have mentioned it as well.

When I first heard Gemini Dream by the Moody Blues as a young teen, I got all excited and asked my mom to drive me downtown so I could buy the new ELO album.
Plowed by the band Sponge sounded exactly like Social Distortion.
