It was recently discovered that some new Sony releases (Blu-ray) have severe black crush.
The digital copy versions which are included don't have that issue.

Here is Sony's email address. Please send them an email so they understand that it is indeed a technical issue >>>

"Black crush" is not a valid technical term. "Crushed blacks" is the correct term.

I haven't seen the discs in question, but we did watch The Interview in HD on VOD and it looked fine. Nothing crushed. How are your monitors calibrated?

I guarantee you, they heavily QC these titles, both with software and with machines. But (as an acquaintance of mine once said) the software won't tell you if the picture is upside down, only that the levels are good or bad.

Vidiot, do you think there's any chance this happened because they somehow forgot to make the BluRay transfers Rec. 709 compliant, ie. 0-255 instead of 16-235?

    That was my guess.

I bet this is a 2.4 vs. 2.2 gamma issue. All my monitors are 2.4, because that's the current setting for pro monitors. It's not a gigantic difference. All broadcast 8-bit transfers follow 16-235, and that's pretty standard.

I own 'Fury' on BD, and didn't find the black level distracting at all. In fact, I thought it was a damn good looking BD. I saw this movie twice at the cinema also.

    So I sent three emails to Sony...finally I received a reply >>>

"Thank you for your interest in Sony Pictures Home Entertainment products.

We have forwarded the email to our management. This issue is still being looked into.

Thank you for you patience in this matter."

Hmmm, sounds like a polite brushoff.

Usually they write things like "There is currently no known issue with this movie's release" .
So "This issue is still being looked into." is at least a little more promising.
