Hey guys, I just came into a Sony SCD-1 player but am missing the stabilizing puck. Does anyone here know where I can source a replacement or know the dimensions, etc, so I can manufacture one to the proper specifications? Thanks for the help!
you might want to check this out: see the comments, the guy who made them may have some, but might also provide you some info, if the contact info is still good
That's a great player. I hope that the puck is your only issue... Very few of these players are still running. These players have 3 very well known modes of failure, and the puck is not one of them. And all are unobtainium.
The puck you are after is exactly 1 3/8" top and 1 1/2" bottom diameter with a very thin felt pad on the bottom and 1/2" deep. It weighs 105 grams. Here's a picture.
Hi, I am the guy who makes the stabilizing puck for the Sony CDP-X5000. Though the Disc Motor and shaft in the X5000 / XA-50ES /XA-7ES /SCD-1 / SCD-777 are the same, the stabilizer does not fit the other models. In the SCD-1, there is not nough room for it when the lid closes, in the XA-50ES, photosensors detecting the stabilizer block it. BUT: A new one is on the way. CAD-rendering is fished, milling will hopefully start this month. The stabilizer will be made of polished brass, like the original, but it will have a plain bearing for tighter fit and proper balance. It has also a velvet layer at the bottom and is rounded for better grip. It will fit the XA-50ES /XA-7ES /SCD-1 / SCD-777. All the best, Salar
@TarnishedEars At the time of release (year 2000) I bought a Sony SCD-1, I used it about six months and kept it in the packaging, after about ten years I decided to use it again, unfortunately I didn't play SACD, as I couldn't find the head for the concert, returned to the box , recently found a seller (ebay) in Germany, who advertises the optical head as original, but it is certainly chineiness, nevertheless bought, to my surprise is working very well, does not refuse any CD or SACD, was thinking of buying one more Optical head and leave in stock! But now that I read that this model has three known defects, I was scared! Please can you tell us about these three defects?
1) Laser failures. This can happen to either CDs or SACDs. But it most commonly happens for SACDs. 2) Spindle-bearing failures. This will also result in SACDs no longer playing due to the increased vibration, but it usually does not impact redbook playback unless it becomes really extreme. 3) Sled-motor failures. The sled motors tend to develop dead spots over time. The only real fix is to replace them.
I would not get your hopes up. These have not been sold by Sony in over 12 years. And the supply dried-up everywhere shortly thereafter. I've been looking for a replacement spindle for my SCD-1 for more than 10 years now to no avail.
Please, you know the part number of parts we need to have in stock, my daughter is in Germany, I will ask her to look for her, if she finds I tell you!
Hi to all! I am so sorry - I forgot to turn on notifications so any answer in this thread did not reach me. Stabilizers for the SCD-1 and 777 will be made in January 2020...
Unfortunately I haven’t followed this thread before as I just gave away my SCD-1. The player developed laser problems a few years ago and I replaced it with a Cambridge CXU which I am now replacing with a Pioneer LX 500. Nobody wanted it so we were about to toss it when fortunately we came across a Sony collector who was very happy to get it. Funny, was trying to give this thing away for years.
Unbelievable... I would have taken it at once. And ad the laser is fixed, with some effort, one could even be able to replace the laser unit with a different type. I.e there is only one Sanyo laser still being built. This laser head is suited for CD/SACD/DVD (to my knowledge, wavelrngths of SACD and DVD are the same...?
I had an XA20ES, which I bought on Audiogon back when it was still community-like. It served me well for years, and the sled-and-puck look drew comments from those who'd not seen such a thing before. I thought its CXD8505BQ DAC was pretty nice, too. I wearied a bit of fiddling with the puck, though, and when the time came that I had to sell some gear, I somewhat reluctantly put the 20ES on the "for sale" list. I recall some advice I saw about the 20ES and other pucked players: "Whatever you do, do NOT lose the puck. It'll be hell finding one."
Unfortunately the other pucks do not fit the X3000 / XA-30ES /XA-20ES. Different Diameter of the motor shaft. They are also clamped magnetically... Could not get hold on one to make a CAD drawing yet..
SONY Dual Laser Pick-Up KHS-180A für SONY SCD-1 SCD-777ES | eBay Currently they sell reader units as if they were original, I cannot guarantee that they are original or Chinese, the important thing is that it costs cheap and works very well!
Hiya, I’m in need of a puck for the SCD-1 after mine mysteriously vanished during a move... Can you help?
Coming, the guy who is milling the pucks promised them to me for the 23rd of February and is overdue now. Need to polish them and add a velvet bottom and Igus bearing. One day work. So I hope shipment can be done mid march. No prices yet, as calculation depends on this first batch.
Amazingly my XA20ES was a sidewalk find and the puck was there too! As was the remote and even the RCA cables!
Well, only XA-30ES and X3000 users would benefit from your sidewalk find-these are the only models the puck will fit. My brass puck replacement fits the SCD-1 / 777 / XA-50 / XA-7 / X5000. ONLY for the X5000, the larger aluminium puck replacement from the video above can be used as well. It does not fit the other players because the recess above the trays is small and inside those players there is a photoelectric barrier. Distance between transmitter and receiver is too small to give room for the larger aluminium version. This is why I designed the brass version...
Can we send some heavy dudes round to the miller to help remind him to make good? ;-) I’ve seen a custom replica on eBay coming from USA but from everything I’m reading yours seem superior...
Hmmm I bought my brother one of these Sony puck players about 18 years ago. It packed up about 10 years later but he still has it. Good to know I can pilfer the puck and maybe make some cash!!!!
