A shame but not surprising. My turntable is a VPI Prime B-stock I got from SSD. This was in December 2016.

Sad to see them go but much sadder that some people's money is lost forever.

If they've gone out of business, then why are they still accepting orders on their website?

I just cancelled my 11 day old order. They haven’t responded to any of my phone calls or emails. Hope PayPal credits my account, might have been a mistake using PayPal.

I retract my optimistic post about this company. It appears the ownership is not truly interested in resolving negative customer experiences, except for those cases that come to popular attention (the general forum). Or not even then - as my original complaint was never satisfactorily resolved.

"Relax," said the Soundstage Direct man, "We are programmed to receive
You can checkout anytime you like, but you will never ever receive!"

No response to have a preorder refunded, so I contacted my credit card company to dispute the charge.

No--that was smart. If you open a claim with them, you have a good shot at getting your money back. They refunded my rather large order of just over $5k.

VPI should realize they’re being stained by this, too. I know it’s not the same company, but the two have been closely linked for years. When I bought my Prime via SSD in 2016, part of my confidence came from the impression that SSD was the premier VPI dealer online. VPI should make sure people who ordered their products and are now out thousands of dollars are made whole.

Why do you believe VPI is responsible for making this right? Not trolling, just curious. I'm currently out a fair chunk of money but going after anyone other than the retailer never really crossed my mind.

I didn’t phrase that effectively. They’re not responsible at all, legally or ethically. But it would be a very good idea for their reputation to assist what can’t be more than a handful of first-time VPI buyers. The little niche market of people willing to pay upwards of $5k for a record player is so tiny I would not allow the stench to drift.

I actually found a post on the VPI forum where a long time customer wrote that when dealing with SSD he felt as if he were dealing with VPI. I felt exactly this way, too. vpiforum.com • View topic - Seth Frank at SoundStageDirect

From what I've read (Vpi Facebook group) they've acknowledged the situation and are assisting as much as possible. Admittedly, I don't know what that assistance would entail - I guess I ought to check into it as I am (or - will be when Paypal refunds the funds I paid) one of those first time buyers :)

It is my understanding that suppliers like VPI also got burned by SSD. Individuals who make a purchase by credit card and who did not receive their item(s) can file a claim with their credit card company and they will get their money back. Unfortunately, suppliers will either have to sue SSD in an attempt to get their money, or in the case of bankruptcy, wait in line with the rest of the creditors for maybe pennies on the dollar.

In any event, it in not the supplier's responsibility nor is it a good precedent, to make the aggrieved party whole.

I certainly don't feel that way. If a dealer goes bad, or breaks pricing rules, this is not the manufacturers fault. If they bail them out, it could encourage others to lowball prices the same way.

I agree what happened is neither VPI's fault nor responsibility. My experience with luxury brands is that they don't think in those terms. Relationships outrank individual transactions, along with the prestige and reputation of the brand.

When I cancelled my order I sent an email to VPI explaining my issues. Mat Weisfeld responded to me to say they were definitely going to find out what was going on. He must have: SSD is no longer listed as a VPI dealer. Also was invited out to see the place. I think they received a number of complaints.

In the end, I still went with VPI, and am very happy with my Prime.

I have placed 2 orders with ssd in the past few months while most of the 1st order was shipped eventually after about 2 months and they sent me a $30 gift certificate I placed a 2nd order about 6 weeks ago the website said that every thing was in stock and would ship in 3-5 days my order is still processing, all I get when I try to call is a message saying to call back during normal business hours, I am calling during normal business hours. This is no way to run a business like some of the other posts all it would take is them letting me know what's going on with my order. I certainly won't be doing business with them ever again and would advise others to steer clear of them.

Well damn. Anyone have any more news? I'd read on another forum a rumor that they were purchased by another company. Received a gift card to SSD unfortunately and used it. For 3 albums. Hopefully I see them one day. Going on a month now.

I have not seen or heard anything.
I just wish they would go back to great service.
I won't order from them again until I know they have corrected the problem.

Mods should combine all three threads about Soundstage Direct. I suspect a lot more people are gonna be posting here that have not received merchandise or refunds.
