No. Never was or have been a fan of Spandau Ballet. I was more of the Breathe (3) or Johnny Hates Jazz type listener. Although the song True was truly over played.
I might give a couple of their CDs a spin here after awhile and see where it goes.... might find a few goodies on the albums I have.

They were fantastic. "Chant" was indeed edgy for the time (hard to believe now) -- new type groups doing killer disco grooves was a fun era 80-83 or so -- and "True" is a soul masterpiece. Great look too. No "vs Duran Duran" from me!!

oh gawd, now I've got "True" stuck in my head. As with Duran Duran, I liked some of Spandau Ballet's early singles and a couple of later songs.

The "Soul Boys of the Western World" documentary was entertaining though.

I was never a fan, in that I never owned any records by them, but I won tickets to the opening night (in Dublin) of their reunion tour in 2009, and they were superb. The subsequent Soul Boys of the Western World documentary is excellent as well. I got to see it in the cinema, which is obviously the best way to see any music documentary, with full-on sound. Martin Kemp actually remarked recently that the 2009 Dublin show was his favourite Spandau Ballet concert.

i was up and down on spandau ballet ... i liked to cut a long story short, chant no.1 and instinction .... but i was a rock guy back then and they were very pop.
i saw the four album box set very cheap recently, and i'm always open to giving stuff a go.
it is never going to be set high in my favourite ever bands etc, but upon first listen they are quite interesting and kemp, for the most part, was a good songwriter.

I really like the True and Parade albums, but didn’t care much for they they did before or afterwards.

    Though overall I’d say ‘yes’.

Yes. They were excellent. Tony Hadley's voice is exceptional.

I see Duran Duran has been mentioned a couple of times on this thread. I never rated them much.

Chant No 1 and To Cut A Long Story Short edgy? In which universe?

They certainly weren't when they came out (yes, I am old enough to remember when the New Romantics appeared) and they haven't become any more so since.

Pretty mainstream pop, allied to a certain London-based fashion victim vibe, all buoyed up by a load of support from media friends and hangers on.

Yup, two posts called those 2 songs edgy.

  21. No, for the most part.

  22. Well, it did take some balls to go out in public dressed like they initially did.

I've looked over this thread three times now - both pages - and can't see anywhere where they're described as edgy. What's the number of the posts you're talking about?

An emphatic no from me :). Japan, XTC and Tears For Fears summed up my interest in 80's music.
