Dural, leader of Buckwheat Zydeco, dies »

Stanley “Buckwheat” Dural Jr. of Carencro, leader of the Grammy- and Emmy-winning band Buckwheat Zydeco, died at 1:32 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center. Dural, who had lung cancer, was 68.

For more than 35 years, Dural exposed zydeco to more people on the planet than any other artist. His band’s music has been heard by millions, from high-profile gigs that included the Olympics, presidential inaugurations, national TV shows and hit movies, like “The Big Easy,” “Fletch Lives” and “The Waterboy.”

Since 1979, Buckwheat Zydeco has been one of the most celebrated bands to come out of Louisiana. The group has shared the stage and studio with Eric Clapton, U2, the Boston Pops Orchestra, B.B. King and other renowned names.

Dural and band performed in the closing ceremonies of the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, which reached a TV audience of 3 billion people. They played at both inaugurations for former President Bill Clinton and countless commercials and TV shows, such as "The Late Show with David Letterman" and the last episode of "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon."

Wow, quite young. Any word as to the cause?
He introduced me to Zydeco, though I did not fall in love with it until I heard it played by Donna the Buffalo.

Lung cancer was the cause of his death as stated in that obituary link

Awww, so sad. He was a great performer, with a great spirit about him. It seemed to me that as the late, great Clifton Chenier's health began to fail, it was Buckwheat who took up the Zydeco mantle, and rocked it up a notch. RIP.

I was lucky enough to see him (him, not them, whatever this article says, I always thought of Buckwheat Zydeco as his name). He put on a hell of a show. I didn't go in with any expectations; I left a convert. A true ambassador.

    Sincere condolences.

Was lucky enough to see him a few times, first one as an opener for Peter Gabriel on what would be the SO tour. then, wow, and in 2007 at a Ponderosa Stomp in New Orleans him sitting in here and there. Bought tickets for me and my folks last Christmas, but the first show in February got pushed back, and the one in August got scratched as well. RIP my friend, RIP

Man, this year, let's get it over with already-allright!

Saw BZ open for Eric Clapton in the late 80s. I could have (and probably should have) gone home once the headliner came on. Gonna spin On a Night Like This right now.

    RIP Mr. Dural.

Yeah I had no idea that was a band name not his stage name. Certainly seemed like they were introducing a person with that name when I saw him at the Crawfish Festival in NJ a couple decades ago.

Did they borrow the name from Little Rascals or was there a different inspiration?

From a news site: "As far as his stage name goes, there's a story behind it. He earned the "Buckwheat" as a nod to the "Little Rascals" character, according to NOLA.com"

Love his albums over the years....like many posting here, he was my introduction to zydeco years ago. Caught him live about 3 or 4 years ago in a small venue (old church). The walls were shaking....I thought the building was going to collapse. Super high energy. I talked with him after the show and he was very friendly. I could tell that he very much enjoyed what he was doing.
