Well, I finally broke down and purchased this set. I got it at the DDD 20% off sale for $30. I have been hesitant to purchase this set because I had already taken my factory video tapes and made up my own DVD set. I really didn't think the quality could be much better. - ..... I was wrong. The pictures are so clean and clear - a total upgrade of my old set ( as good as it was ).

I remember seeing this series when it first ran. Nowdays - after having 4 additional renditions of Star Trek - with good story lines and upgraded special effects, I think it is hard to appreciate how good this series was for the day and age it was broadcast for. Having Shatner, Nimoy, and the others do the voices certainly helped it, but the story writing was good too. I especially liked the show - "The Slaver Wearpon" There are some other gems in there too. If you have been thinking about it but have been hesitant because of the price you might want to cruise over to deepdiscount.com at warp speed and pick this up. I used the code SUPERSALE for the discount.

The price kept me for purchasing this set, too. I might have to pull the trigger now.

I've always felt that this series was very underrated. It certainly supplemented the high doses of syndicated reruns I was practically living on back in the early and mid-'70s. I'm very happy that this was deemed worthy of a DVD release and have no regrets having invested the money to get a copy.

More like under appreciated even by ST fans. Some of the episodes were written by the same persons who worked on the original series and thought some would had made great live action ST movies.

I think most people think because it's animated that the plots were simple and "childish". That's not the case, some of the episodes are as good if not better than the original.

True, most people may have thought it was written for Saturday morning, but some of the stories were for a 4th season of TOS, but they were rewritten for the animated series. Of course they were limited in what they could do with Saturday morning guidelines.

I actually thought that the animated series was able to do some things (in regards to special effects ) that could never be done with the original series, given the technology of the day.

  10. While I liked the animated series (and still do) the half hour format meant things were a bit rushed in terms of drama and additional character development. Have to admit, though, it was (and still is)one of the best sf animated shows ever developed.

This set can now be found at Wal-Mart for $14.96, down from an original MSRP of $54.99 and cheaper than any online price. Here's a DVDTalk thread about it.
