It's not discussed in the films but its depicted use is exclusive to the Dark Side. Starwars.com, which seems to be the official site, lists it as 'a dark side ability used...by calling on their hatred and aggressive feelings.'

There were a couple of (no longer canon) examples of its use by Jedi - but as it's explicitly using the Force to inflict damage and pain it was considered inherently corrupting, and portrayed as controversial. Most of the examples of its use were by members of the (post OT) New Jedi Order from the books that's been wiped away by the new films. so there could be an opportunity for them to fudge it in that way and/or do something cool with Rey.

Well, assuming Rey uses it in defense after some jerkwad (read: Kylo) uses it on her, I don't think Yoda would hold it against her.

Good lord this movie is a freakin’ mess.

So you can lightspeed kamikaze a ship into another ship now? That would have been useful against, oh I don’t know, the DEATH STAR?

Literally none of the mysteries of the last film got resolved.

That damn casino is nearly as bad as the 50s diner from Episode II. What was the whole point of that? And the orphaned younglings hit a little too close to The Phantom Menace. I was half expecting that the noise from the race track was going to be Podracing at that point.

“Look closer and you’ll see that this place isn’t what it seems on the surface” [FINN LITERALLY LOOKS CLOSER WITH BINOCULARS]

The sheer amount of exposition in this movie is absurd. Not one thing is left to the viewer to infer themselves.

Not even going to go into Kylo’s gigantic pecs....

I totally thought that as well! I even leaned over to my friend in the theater and said "Oh my God it's a Pod Race track!" before we saw it was only pretty horsies.

Just saw this and I loved it! Couple of thoughts:

    - Loved that Snoke called out Kylo Ren at the beginning, basically telling him what all Star Wars fans were thinking: How could he not beat Rey who had never picked up a light sabre before, to get rid of the mask and that he's still a child.

    - Loved the final scene with Luke. I thought it was a great way to kill him off, and to me anyway, it was unexpected. I thought he would have been killed by Kylo or just simply battled Kylo to a draw. I was not expecting that he was force projecting himself.

    - Was also surprised that Snoke manipulated both Rey and Kylo. Loved that twist! Also was surprised how quickly Snoke was killed. I thought for sure he'd be in the next chapter.

    - Wasn't too crazy on the Leia going through space thing. I liked the idea, I think it was just poorly executed.

    - Wasn't crazy on the casino thing either, but hey, they need new planets and locations.

I really need to watch this again though, I'm curious if I'll like it as much now that I know all the twists.

    Really enjoyed it though.

Obviously this movie needed to explain to you why a "lightspeed kamikaze" is not just a trick you can do every other Thursday. It was a desperation ploy at a time when there were literally less than three ships available. The situation in Ep IV was dire but not nearly worth sacrificing a needed cruiser when they had another plan that worked.

It's also entirely possible nobody had tried this before Holdo did it. But the movie didn't outright say it so I guess that's not a possibility. ;)

I loved the film but that is the one thing that I had a problem with, because as you say it would just be used all the time as a weapon and there would be no point having expensive star destroyers if you just need an old ship with lightspeed and a willing person to fly it.

However, in their defence, as Han says:

Ben Kenobi: How long before you make the jump to lightspeed?
Han Solo: It'll take a few moments to get the coordinates from the navicomputer.
Luke Skywalker: [frantic] Are you kidding? At the rate they're gaining—
Han Solo: Traveling through hyperspace ain't like dusting crops, boy! Without precise calculations we could fly right through a star or bounce too close to a supernova and that'd end your trip real quick, wouldn't it?

So in theory they did know before that it was a 'thing' you could do that would destroy the ship and I presume take the other ship with it.

Fair. My point above was mainly that you can't call out a movie for explaining too much and then not actually taking the time yourself to theorize why a plothole may not actually be a plothole. Maybe that's just the Trekkie in me talking :D

I think it would be hilarious if Kylo Ren were unexpectedly killed at the climax of Episode IX not by Rey or the Force or other Jedi... but by Chewie, who's been plotting his revenge for the death of Han Solo all along. Wouldn't it be great if Chewie winds up being the hero in this thing?

That's one of the things about the film that bugged me. Really? We've never seen anyone use this trick before?

All it would have taken is a few lines of dialog - something along the lines of

Poe: "She's going to hyperspace ram them? That never works! You have to get the timing just rig..."

    BOOM!!!

    Leia: "Yes. You do."

And then Chewie roasts and eats him as Force Ghost Han looks on nodding with approval!

It will never happen. Chewie didnt even get a nod from Leia after Han was killed. He is just a prop; he couldnt even say hi to Luke in The Last Jedi; he stayed in the Falcon eating chicken.

Chewie “says hi” to Luke when he breaks his door down...

You know what? That is ********, now that I think about it. Luke couldn't even give Chewie proper lodging? Or an affectionate scratch under the chin? He's a core character and gets absolutely NO respect in these new films. His only good moment was when he was sweet talking that nurse in TFA. And when he capped the punk in the ribs after he killed Han. Other than that he just chauffeurs the girl around and watches his friends die. Aww, that's it, I'm back to hating the new film! (kicks over the coffee table and storms out)

Or prequel R2-D2 shows up, sprouts rockets and kamikazes into Kylo!

I don't think Chewie would want to exact revenge on Kylo anymore than Leia would.

yeah, killing his best friend's son?

Finn will do it, and as he watches him die say 'not bad for a traitor'.

All that stuff could have happened off camera as it were. They don't have time for all these things.

Unless you buy the idea that Luke all of a sudden found a bottle of "Just for Men" beard dye, there's no way I could imagine one would believe even at the outset of Luke's "projection" that it was actually him in person for real. I've seen a bunch of people point out that his using the blue saber was a tell, and that certainly is. But the haircut and hair dye and beard dye making him look presumably just like he did when Ben/Kyle and Leia last saw him was a much more obvious, immediate tell.

I didn't notice it the first time we saw it, but the in the second viewing I noticed he didn't leave any footprints or move any salt around that showed red in the salt. Kylo's every foot step and slide made a red mark on the ground.

I noticed the shorter hair and dyed beard but didn't see as a tell that it was a Force projection the first time I saw it. I'm sure that most noticed the change in his appearance, but I doubt that most knew the reason why.

I don't think it was clear specifically that he was doing a "force projection" (since that's a thing they made up just for this movie), but it was clear to me based on his altered appearance and the fact that the altered appearance matched how he looked in the flashback (dyed beard, shorter hair) that we were not seeing in the present, in-the-flesh Luke. It was some sort of dream/hallucination/hologram/projection, something along those lines. The "conversations" Kylo and Rey were having, where Luke could see Kylo there with Rey even though he wasn't actually there, was also a hint I'm guessing.

If Luke *had* been there in the flesh, that would be a really strange continuity choice, to imply that Luke randomly took the time to dye his hair and beard and get a haircut.

And if they'd done something people had seen before, everyone would be up and arms about what a "rehash" it all was.

And yet they find the time to spend half an hour on a redundant sub plot flying to a casino planet.....
