Stargate SG-1 , Season 1 DVD set, do the other seasons look this poor?

I'm getting a kick out of the show but the compression has made many scenes look unnatural with choppy motion, do the robot, in many sequences. I've just watched disc 1 so far but all 3 episodes are afflicted. Does it get any better in later seasons if I get hooked on the show?

I love the show, too. It was produced on a rather low budget for Showtime for the 1st four seasons(I think). Quality gets better as they moved to Sci-Fi(SyFy) channel but none are reference quality video.

I can see that it's not shot all that well. The DVD shows that but the motion/compression problems look like lousy encoding to me.

I really liked the show. If memory serves, the first four seasons were shot on 16mm film, and in the fifth season, they began using 35mm film for the series. Beginning with that fifth season, there was a huge increase in video quality. It's been a few years since I watched the first few seasons on DVD but I don't remember observing the quality issues you mentioned.
