Why bother going to a concert if only to hear the hits?

Why would one buy a ticket to a Rarities Night show and then grow restless when rarities are played? I guess that's what earns the moniker of knucklehead, but still... [IMG]

What I find hilarious listening to the Beacon "Rarities Night" audience recording is the serious hardcore Dan fans shouting out then names of some of the more obscure unreleased tracks (i.e. the guy you hear yelling out, if memory serves, "'Kulee Baba'!!!")- clearly some of the punters on the night knew their Steely Dan bootlegs:laugh: One of my favourite Steely Dan performances for sure, even if not every song they played that night was a "rarity".

I admit I'd love to hear Donald Fagen introducing "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" something along the lines of, "I f--king hate this song. I used to walk out of restaurants if I heard it playing...", both of which are true. Fagen might have liked the chick the song was named after, but he's never liked the song itself- I have no idea how much of that has to do with it musically being more or less a straight lift of "Song For My Father" though...
Well, to be fair, not everybody who goes to a Steely Dan show is a hardcore fan. Fagen knows this, as does Mick Jagger or Paul McCartney or any other artist where people ask the same thing you did. These guys know what songs are gonna put more bums in seats, they're not necessarily out to please the maybe 2% of the audience who would love to hear "Turn That Heartbeat Over Again" or "Time Waits For No One" or "Monkberry Moon Delight" or...you get the idea.

You would think...and I would hope...that at least at a Beacon residency, he'd mix it up. A lot. After all, the very idea of the residency came up because of the success the Allman Brothers had. And THEY barely played the same song twice during their residencies.

But, it'll never happen. You're gonna hear "Hey Nineteen" at every show. And I'll hear the audience cheer for it on my way to the bathroom.

I have never had the privilege of seeing the Dan, alas, but I reckon "Black Friday" would be my "bathroom/concession" song. Love the studio version...despise how they play it live. They took a kickass barroom shuffle and made it swing. Yuck:hurl::laugh:

Time for the Dan again. I’ve been listening to Two Against Nature & Everthing Must Go this morning.

Have to say that EMG is the clear winner, although there’s much to admire on both albums.

Donald’s voice became just a litte bit to slick for me, although he does a very good creepy old man.

How do you rate Circus Money v Morph the Cat v Everything must go. Better albums to rate it against maybe ?

Never owned CM as not a big fan of 11 whacks, but love Paging Audrey. Also love the great pagoda of funn on Morph. One truly great melody and magic solos of course.

Yeah, I love this one too. Kind of a piece with Everything Must Go.

Of the trilogy, I think I like Kamakiriad the best, but there’s not much in it.

On The Dunes probably swings it for me.

It really is. I was working 12 hour shifts with a fellow Steely Dan nut when Kamakiriad came out. We were the only people working the Saturday it was released, so we took turns listening to the album on headphones, whilst the other one did the work. We had been looking forward to the album coming out for ages, so finally getting to hear it and chat about it stays long in the memory.

I never was a big fan, but I kept hearing their name in muso circles and a while back saw Rick Beato break down one of their tunes on Youtube and got a better appreciation for what they do. So the other day I went out and brought another 3 of their albums. In other words, not an instant appeal band for me but a slow grower.
