Rafe stated he didn’t have any headphones at his home nor had he listened to any in some time. It doesn’t give me much of a warm feeling after that statement.

Oppo has no relevance to this discussion or to home theater in the grand scheme of things. I understand that pro installers were all fans and that there was a tiny market for entry level audiophile spinners. So what? It's not as if Panasonic dropped out!

Consolidation happens for all sorts of reasons.

    Yeah.

Stereo gear is reviewed in Stereophile.

Any (once) avid readers of Innerfidelity here? Seems it's gone short on critical acumen and sweet on the product press release. Not that I personally object so much with this direction (I get the commercial motivation of such things, however maligned or idiotic the end result may be), but it's more a case of who will care anymore? I mean, these kinds of takes are a dime a dozen elsewhere and anywhere. Perhaps even more varied and interesting on such fora as here. Shame really. It can only trade on its good name for so long.

...have you seen Audiostream? It has turned into a "Lifestyle" web-zine...

Can only largely claim ignorance where Audiostream is concerned. They lost an asset in losing Jana - much as I like Herb et al (Herb's meanderings are as euphonious and lyrical as the amps he avowedly loves, a delight in their own right), it was welcoming to see a staff member with assumedly acute hearing, a gift for art direction, a love for Aphex Twin etc. How refreshing. Could've led to good things long term. Just opening the Stereophile page is like a cache from 10 years ago...

I'm surprised to see Rafe Arnott running the show there. Seems like a nice guy, but it was only a few years ago that he was on this forum looking for help with his new RP6 and having trouble matching a low-power amp to power hungry speakers. He's a good writer, so I get it, but it would be nice to see folks with more expertise fillng the roll of critic.

Who do you guys enjoy reading? Whether web-zine or print. Simply for the pleasure of reading.

I'm usually pretty bored when reading Stereophile. I don't subscribe to TAS. I've read some of John Darko's stuff on his page. Not bad. Off hand, I consider it more entertaining than the average Stereophile piece. I get the Part-time Audiophile emails. Haven't though it over, but I like 6moons (Srajan Ebaen) perhaps best.

I really miss the time I did not have to sell a kidney to buy an audio equipment!

They got pushed out by some hot headed, closed minded, argumentative forum members here.

I find it enjoyable, and I simply take it for what it is. Besides, it's not good to read vid screens at bedtime, so what are ya gonna do? Just go to sleep?

I guess $7 is expensive compared to freebies especially if one finds not much use for the contents.

Changing the screen to white lettering on black background makes late night reading much easier. I’ve done this with all my book and mag apps.

Such a sweeping condemnation. What do you want in an audio magazine that they don't provide? Anyway, my favorite is HiFi+. They have the best graphical design, photo quality, and paper quality of any audio mag I've seen. It's the very definition of audio-equipment porn, IMO. They have good British writing (albeit highly subjective), and review quite a few products and brands not captured by the other publications. I've made a couple of major purchases (speakers and turntable) based on their reviews piquing my interest followed by hard-to-arrange but impressive auditions.

I think print media is on a tough road but I don't see it going away for the following reasons.
    1. Audiophiles seek great writers that have a knack for capturing sound quality differences. TAS and Stereophile have superb writers.
    2. Audiophiledom is a niche no doubt but one that includes a lot of upper income people that represent a customer segment attractive to both luxury goods sellers and audio manufacturers.
    3. Stereophile and TAS are supplementing their offering with digital websites which in theory helps sell more magazines and creates new channels for reading. I get my Stereophile by Zinio and its a great app. TAS offers downloads but their app is a work in progress.

Rafe is a friend of mine and I can offer some insight since I worked with him when he was an editor at Part-Time Audiophile. Rafe has the following qualities:
    1. He is a superb writer and is good about seeking out more niche brands that offer great sound but may be lesser known like Audio Note, Fern & Roby, etc.
    2. He is an accomplished photographer and videographer. His Fern & Roby video was next level. In an increasing digital world these are very valuable skills for Stereophile, especially with Jana leaving.
    3. He is a good editor and did a superb job putting together our Occasional "e-zine" publication.
Best of all, he is a true gentlemen and has always been an all-around good guy. This was a loss for Part-Time Audiophile but I see this as a nice progression in his career and I'm very happy for him.

I just took a look at the latest issue of Tone Audio.
It’s very nice to look at but my immediate thought was very little meat there.
Once you take out the ads (there are a shocking number) there isn’t much left
