And guess who else made an appearance?

Leann Rimes also appeared as well along with Nick Jonas.

I think Steve was just trying to be nice.
His version is still the one to beat.

Steve Perry - one of the great rock singers of all time weighed down by Journey's material.

    Always liked his solo stuff.

Yeah, anyone familiar with the master recording as well as anyone who attended a Journey concert during the early 1980's would disagree.

Aw c'mon, what was he supposed to say, "Sorry baby, you'll never be me!" He's a nice guy who was trying to make her feel good. I thought he handled the moment as well as he could've.

Anyway, he looks fantastic and let's hope this is a sign of new music coming - maybe even The Mythical New Album?

So before I watch the clip (really not interested in hearing the Idol candidate now that y'all have talked her up), did Perry sing at all?

If I were him, I would have only said, "wow, I'm speechless" and leave it at that.

Atrocious singing aside, she can't even get the very first phrase right, " just a small town girl living in a lonely world he took the midnight train going anywhere."

    By lying?

Sorry, but I feel these singing shows need a great deal more criticism. It really serves no use to lie to these young people and inflate their egos when there is an opportunity to give them constructive criticism that will really help them in their careers.

Not a big Idol watcher, but isn't it true that the "special guest" artists are usually pretty hands-off in the criticism department? After all, they have to maintain public good will, they're not going to risk it by trashing some amateur performer on TV. Especially someone like Steve Perry, who's been out of the spotlight for years and whom a lot of viewers won't know very well as a person.

Fair point, but that's the judges' job. Steve Perry was not there as a judge and was kind of put on the spot. Judging by his previous public appearances like the R&R Hall Of Fame, he was only ever going to go for kind and gracious at the expense of brutal honesty.

He actually turned down the offer of being a judge because he said he could never criticise anyone else's singing.

I'd love to see him as a mentor though.
