Morning! A beautiful sunny AM hello to Steve and the whole Hee-Haw gang at the site! I'm playing Born on the Bayou (SACD layer, cranked waaaaaaay up - love that feedback burst in the opening moments). We've learned that our host has a house full of neat-o audio gizmos, both pro and home type to help him make choices when remastering stuff like Kool Ray and the Polaroidz "Introducing Kool Ray and the Polaroidz" debut LP (ok, this detail is make believe on my part). I wanna know - Steve, when you don't have a project slapped on yer reference gear, whaddya playback a cd or SACD on just because you wanna hear a tune for fun? Are you able just to listen for fun, or do you start making sonic notations in yer noggin and get bogged down in the muck???

Actually, Steve, I'd like to know how you choose which stereo you pick to listen to something?

Do you have a favourite for rock or classical or blues or....

    Gary

    How's the electricity bill? ;)

Ed Bishop Incredibly, I'm still here

For fun, Indy, or for laughs? If the latter, any old boom box will do....:D

For fun, a car CD deck while toolin' down the road...what else?:)

Should get an interesting answer, anyway....

Hmmm, I woulda suspected an old Pioneer receiver (with .0000000000001 THD), Technics direct drive turntable with Shure M-95ED cartridge, JVC cassette deck (with Super ANRS rather than Dolby), and Pioneer HPM-100 speakers... ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

Steve, for those of us who are not as up on classic audio gear, care to give a rundown of what we're looking at in that tasty pic? I can pick out the Macs. After that, I get a little lost.

    Denon CD player (not visible)

1960's Tannoy Westminsters 15" dual concentric speakers (50 dollars at Goodwill, heh.)

Benjamin Miracord German turntable with Shure M44 cartridge (for playing 78's, 45's and LP's)

Marantz 7C tubed preamp, early 1960's.

LA Audio phono preamp from Denmark from 1998 (that gold thing on the left, third shelf down).

Marantz 8B tubed stereo amp from early 1960's.

    Second bunch (on right):

    Marantz 10B tubed tuner.

    McIntosh MC-30 tubed monoblocks.

    McIntosh C-20 (since sold).

What every doctor or dentist had as a dream system in 1961!

Very nice. How would you describe the sound?

How would I describe the sound?

I guess you haven't read the million posts on this in the Hardware Forum, heh.

The sound is wonderful! Midrange magic, palpablilty in spades! Dynamic, natural, awesome, etc, .etc,

The MARANTZ sound is more neutral, with nice tight bass. The McINTOSH sound is colored, but in that good way that resurrects voices from the dead; it's uncanny. Slow bass on the Mac's though. It's all that tube rectification. But if you take that away, you lose that extra magic...So, do what I do (as you can see in the picture): Have them both and switch back and forth as your mood takes you!

Maybe you should start here, but skip the first pages:

So, what were the last few things that you cranked for fun??? Is it hard to not listen and not go "hmmmm, +1 @40hz"????

    Steve sez:

"You're asking me what I play for fun and to relax? Guess!"

    Steve,

Nice system. Like stepping into the 50s or 60s Golden Age. I'm a tubehead as well but with Audio Research gear...

Are you using Grover's cables on that system as well?

It seems above Monster Cable treatment to me.

    :)

Grover wire, but designer cable on the Tannoys. Anything to help that 12k roll off!

Shure M44 for LP's - really Steve? Is the V15 too modern for this basically vintage system?

Can you say what kind of "designer cable"?

Indeed. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to assemble such a system, even if I had the money.

That's why I'm here - to learn this kind of stuff :D

    Congrats, Steve!

The arm won't take a V15. Basically I use conical for everything, thus saving the grooves of LP's and 45's. Just like the old radio station daze..

And it tracks "hot" records clean Steve, even near the end?

Sure, it's conical. It glides over the grooves, hitting just the top. Perfect for styrene and other hot cut discs. It might not have the greatest freq. response, but neither does the Tannoys. And the records are unscathed; that's the important part.
