I know you've ducked this question in the past, but maybe now you can scratch our itch a bit. What speakers do you use when you master? I've heard that you can roam from room to room in your house and that there are stereo systems both downstairs and upstairs (understanding wife, eh?) Can you elaborate?

Pretty please? Just this once? :)

Well, when I'm working at home, I sometimes use the following:

Whatmough Lead Lined monitors (from the friendly land down under)

British Tannoy System 12 DMT (in my office).

    Legacy Focus Customs (special crossovers)

    Canadian Baby Yorkville studio monitors

1967 15" British Tannoy horn loaded Golds in the Lancaster enclosure

    Kochel 200 horn loaded

    Horn loaded Lowther Medallions

    Legacy Victoria Customs

1973 JBL Studio Monitors (promised to Holy Zoo)

    1971 AR3a's

and a new edition (as of this morning):

    Meadowlark Blue Herons

    Steve,

Are these speakers just for use while working, or are some like the Blue Herons I would think, used for your pleasure listening?

Steve, what would be your 'desert island' pick of speakers - if you could only take one pair with you?

My desert island speakers? You mean what are my favorite speakers, right?

Well, in the whole wide world, or just in my possession?

    Steve,

Are the JBL's 4312's or a larger model? As a second set of speakers on my system, I have a pair of circa 1973 JBL L-100's that really like 70's Rock music--the California stuff...Doobies, Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, etc.

    Just the little ones, Bob.

Not quite as colored as the JBL 100's, but same size, a lot flatter response. Still, they served their purpose for me. I couldn't have mastered "Hotel California" without them. I would have given up on the project!

    Steve,

Thanks! for the story about Hotel California. I bought the L-100's as graduation present (college) to myself. I thought I had a pretty "hot" speaker at the time. Now, after all these years, the bass sounds pretty "flabby" when I choose to listen to them.....by the way I bought them after listening to China Grove by the Doobies at the audio store!

    Bob :)

    Yeah, I remember those days.

"China Groove" could sell JBL's alright. Funny.

I think our local "University Stereo" had "Houses Of The Holy" on 24/7.

Yes, your favorites (sorry I was not too clear!). As Gort Jr said, why not both?

Just curious as I actually ran across two sets of JBL speakers recently. Too bad they were in bad shape (one set needed repair to the woofer and the other was missing tweeters!) :( Sad. Sadder still is that they wanted to sell them to me for $140.00! "No tweeters?!? How much!?! The name is Tucker, not Sucker!"

Anyway, what are your favorites? I realize that the Meadowlark Blue Herons are brand new to you and so I would ask that you exclude them!

    :)

The problem with older speakers is that the foam rots after a certain time. Ah well.

For fun, I love to play my old Tannoy Lancasters. Same speaker that British studios like IBC, Olympic, etc. used to record and mix on. Big 15" woofer with a hi-freq. horn in the center of it. Amazing sound (if you don't mind a top end roll off around 12k). They can be cranked up and still keep their sonic signature.

The $50.00 I paid for them in a junk shop was well worth it (thanks to Robert Pincus for the phone tip).

My favorite all around speakers? The pair of old RCA Ubangi speakers that Kevin Gray and Alan Sides took out of the Mann's Chinese Theatre when they dumped their old sound system (thank you, "Star Wars").

Each with a big wooden 4' horn (heck, maybe bigger) with a 30" (or was it 60") woofer (and a super tweeter). Mind-blowing sound! Currently in Steve Hall's mastering room at Future Disc Systems.

    Steve,

30 inch woofer! Wow! They must produce 25-50Hz bass where you can actually count the cycles!

Could someone with a bit of "knowledge" about speakers, take a look at the link below and tell me something about these speakers described/pictured? I don't know anything about them.

Steve's comment (above) about a "Thrift Store" bargain applies here. I'll let you know how much I paid for a similar pair (not the actual ones pictured) in a later post. Thanks!

    Yeah cunningham,

I thought that was funny too. Kinda like Spinal Tap setting the volume at "11" on their amps!

By the way, I set mine at the medium setting. Unfortunately, I never experimented either...just placed 'em in the bookcase after hooking them up. Told ya I don't know anything about them!!! I also know that someone/everyone is cringing at me saying "in the bookcase". :D

When it comes to pro speakers, the best cones I've ever heard are Eminence. Community makes decent speakers and decent subwoofers (the best pro speaker units I've ever heard). We do sell Community and Eminence product at my employer's website now and I do listen to those speakers when I'm working. We now have software from Eminence where you can build your own speaker cabinet and we can order the individual parts.

    Steve,

have you ever heard the Quad ESL 57s (I believe you refered to them as 'steam heaters' in a previous post :D)?

I absolutely love them - so natural. They certainly have the "breath of life".

I found a pair of these Quad ESL 57s recently. They have their own on / off switch at the back, right? They are also overpriced. But what do you need to drive these speakers? Could my MC240 do it (40 watts) or should I consider MC240 monoblocks at 80 watts / side?
