I'm about to grab an original US copy of this at a local used shop. Just to make sure I'm getting the right one..... it's MCAD-37217, correct?

Also, does anyone notice any difference in sound between this one and the Canadian version?

    From the SH Discography page:

There have been several cd masterings of Who's Next on MCA, all with the same catalog number. The original 1984 mastering by SH was uncredited.

Steve mastered a version of Who's Next for MCA in the mid-'80s. The catalog number was MCAD-37217.

Chances are if you have a "Manufactured In Japan" pressing it is Steve's. However, MCA switched masters along the way, and at least some, if not all (it is unclear) "Manufactured In The USA" issues are NOT mastered by Steve. Luckily, MCA in Canada has started using Steve's master for their CD. The catalog number is MCABD-37217 and it can be found at www.HMV.com.

At least some BMG music club copies also use Steve's master.

If you are unsure what version you have, look at the total time. If it is around 43:25 (plus or minus a second or two) you should have Steve's version. If it is around 43:13, it is NOT Steve's. Also, keep in mind Steve's master is NOT used on any of the following versions: Germany Polydor, MCA gold, MCA/Polydor remix/remaster with bonus tracks, MFSL gold with bonus tracks.

Speaking of who ;) , the MCA Masterdisc (gold) version of W/N has been showing up in quantity at eBay for $6.99 BIN from the same seller.

Any reason why the value of that one has dropped or is it just an inexperienced seller?

Okay, now I am really confused! The US version I have at home that I've been listening to is MCAD-37217 and it clocks in at 43:15. I went down to the used shop and theirs clocks in at 43:13. My Canadian version clocks in at 43:26. Does this mean my US version that I've been enjoying isn't even Steve's?!! If so, this is hilarious! That means even the old US version that Steve didn't do smokes Astley's first remaster.

Steve, I was wondering.....were you using tube gear when you mastered this title back then?

    Re: BTW...

Yeah, this was a big shocker for me. A real sad shame. I've been listening to nothing but E.S. for the last two days. I need to get a copy of Figure 8. For some reason I've never picked up that album. Okay, end of thread crap.

    Well, yes and no.

Steve's version is available here. Always has been.

The remaster is also available here for about $20.00. Because of overstock, cheap consumers, consumers who reconize a superior product or the magic of automatic ordering, Steve's version is also available.

MCADB-37217 is the right one (Steve's).

    :)

Actually Dave, Steve's was the only master of Who's Next that we had up here until the remaster came out a few years back. We never had the same situation as the USA did with the switched masterings. ;)

You should have seen my buddies face when he bought the remaster and compared it to my inexpensive SH version on my system. "I got f'in ripped off!"

The non-Hoffman MCA version from the late 80s/early 90s (which is apparently what you have) IS also pretty good. They probably also used the "lost" original master tape to produce that version.

When you say "Astley's first remaster" I presume you mean the 1995 version which was partially remixed? Just to clarify, Jon Astley did not remaster that version. He was involved in the production, he might have been involved in the remixing (I forget) but that was released before he started taking on the role of mastering engineer. I think it was Tim Young credited with the mastering on that one, but I'm not at home to check.

The "non-Hoffman" version from the late 1980s is a clone of the British Polydor CD production master.

On page 145, section 3, paragraph 4 of the Steve Hoffman Forum bylaws there is a rule that states:

"Every 3 months (at minimum) there must be a new thread started to discuss the SH version of Who's Next"

    ;) ;)

We could paper the Brooklyn Bridge with Who's Next threads alone. It could actually have it's own forum section.
