I was curious to get some opinions from anyone who might have The Sky Is Crying MFSL Gold Disc and if it has much or any improvment over the stock Sony issue. Perhaps your input can help me decide whether or not to go after it. Thanks All ! -ED :)

Did Sony ever reissue this with the rest of Vaughan's catalog?

Not that I know of. Nor "Live Alive" (just as well).

I don't have the MoFi "Sky is Crying." I read that it was a big improvement -- probably in Stereophile. So take that with a grain of salt.

For interested parties, both the '82 and '85 Montreux performances are coming out on DVD soon.

I really wish they would officially release some of the SRV radio shows.

No, just the albums he put out while he was still with us. That's why the MOFI has me curious. I also would love to see an expanded version of the Vaughan Brothers CD as I've heard that there are some tracks from those sessions still on the shelf. -ED

Well guys I just happen to own both of the SRV gold cds. The MFSL is stellar nothing even comes close to this issue, not even on vinyl. It sounds like he's sitting on a bar stool, in your living room, playing the acoustic guitar and singing Life By The Drop. It feels like you can reach out and touch him.
Couldn't Stand The Weather on SBM also stands supreme to any other version that I've heard so far. A far cry from the standard release and well worth the price.
If anyone gets these and isn't happy I would consider buying them. :?)

Have you compared the SBM gold CD to the remaster with bonus tracks? I never did, but I always assumed they were the same (except for the bonus tracks). I'd be curious to try the SACD.

On a side note -- does anyone on this thread have any SRV radio shows on CD? I would make it worth your while to dupe them. ;)

I probably have 50+ SRV live shows, but they're all mp3s.

"Couldn't Stand the Weather" on Mastersound Collector's Edition (SBM) is available at musicforasong for $20. I picked a copy up last weekend. It's not a cut-out.

No Patrick I have not heard the newly remastered or the sacd. The sacd version should have a pretty good chance of being better but then again, it really depends on who had their hands on the wheel doesn't it? [IMG]

I thought the same thing until I compared the gold version of "Time Out" to the Legacy version that was released later. To my amazement, there was a definite difference. The soundstage on the gold CD was a bit withdrawn (like sitting a few rows back), which I found appropriate for the music, and the cymbals had a bit more shimmer, which I also preferred.

The two SRV versions are much closer. I haven't done a "blind" test, but I'd bet I wouldn't be able to reliably choose which was which. That said, I have a slight preference for the gold. The addition of the great bonus tracks, however, makes the aluminum the way to go, especially if you're only getting one version.

It baffles me why Sony/Columbia didn't just copy the gold CD tracks when they did the aluminum version. That sure would've been the easy thing to do! Was their intent was to improve on the gold CDs? They didn't succeed on the Brubeck, and the SRV is too close to call.

BTW, both the gold and the remaster Brubeck completely smoke the regular CD release of Time Out, which has terrible sound.

John Buchanan I'm just a headphone kind of fellow. Stax Sigma

The Time Out remaster is HDCD encoded - the Mastersound is not apparently

I had the old "Time Out" (pre-Mastersound) CD as well. I was blown away when I got the gold CD ($21.99, those were the days...). I konw some negative things have been said about the Mastersound series, but there was an unbelievable improvement on that release. I think the old CD must have cut off at 8 kHz or something. You could actually hear the cymbals on the gold CD. (There probably is a treble boost as well, but I don't care!) To this day, I think this is the best example I have of an audiophile release destroying the standard release. In fairness, though, there are many gold titles I own where I have no basis for comparison.
