This month, Universal was scheduled to release the first Who album sessions for the first time in stereo, based on the session tapes that producer Shel Talmy finally agreed to make available. Last month, it was announced that this date had been delayed. As you may recall, on his website, Talmy created quite a stir in announcing that he was mastering the recordings not only for stereo release on CD, but also for eventual SACD release. In light of Universal's Stones announcement of the August release of its catalog on hybrid SACD/CDs, could we soon be hearing The Kids Are Alright in glorious stereo on SACD? Anybody have any information?
Before the Stones announcement, I would have said unlikely. Now, though, if Talmy is indeed creating both masters simultaneously, a hybrid SACD release looks more possible. This could be a very happy year indeed for my SACD player. The delay, though, was reported by Talmy to be down to secondary market rights issues... Ryan
