They re-recorded it for US issue, but it never came out except for "Fodderstompf" which was on the b-side of the "Death Disco" 12" single.

Sodom's Obsessed By Cruelty have two completely different recordings. The first version was released through Metal Blade (USA) and Banzai Records (Canada) from which their recording company was not happy with it. The second version (my preferred version) is the rougher, much more aggressive sounding version was released by Steamhammer.

Not quite complete. A few tracks were never redone. Steinman's own Bad For Good was mostly refettled in later years too.

And then there's John Coltrane's Ascension where there are two different takes on different pressings of the LP.

I wasn’t aware of this release. I do love Paris 1919 so intrigued how the alternate version holds up next to the original.

It might be a stretch, but Kate Bush's Director's Cut is made up of songs from The Sensual World and The Red Shoes, some of which were restructured, and includes three that were re-recorded completely.

Borderline case: Grateful Dead's Aoxomoxoa where they reportedly recorded the album on 8-track equipment, then redid it all when 16-track machines became available in 1969. Some (I don't think all) of the original 8-track recordings have surfaced.

To be fair, not the entire album was redone, only about 4 songs. But I guess style-wise the Cult's 3rd album was going to be one album but ended up being another.

The Wedding Present have recently released a complete re-recording of their 1988 album George Best.

I understand that the re-recordings are, themselves, about 10 years old, making the new album title George Best 30 a bit of a stretch...

Also PJ Harvey included a demo version of her debut album, Dry, with initial copies in 1992.

EMI wouldn't give the masters over so the entire second half is not only re recorded but different - and it's the common version... worse album surely. Any pressing from 1984-2010 is this one, any from 2010 on is the proper album or any copy before 1984.

  21. Already mentioned, but the complete alternate version of Miles Ahead (only found on the complete Miles & Gil box), was and continues to be a revelation. Simply stunning, in every way.

I hate to be a stickler, but the electric version was recorded live, and the acoustic version contains home recordings/demos. Neither version was recorded in a studio.

The last five albums from Manic Street Preachers have "deluxe" editions which come with a bonus 2nd disc of the entire album as demos they recorded before the main recording. Their next album should have that as well.
