Surprised it took so long. I remember back in the 90's I heard all footage was lost, but the NFL was searching for a copy.

Cool indeed. I think many will be surprised at how the "style" of football has changed. Should be pretty rough. Like football should be.

but this is not the NBC or CBS telecast, it is NFL films merged with NBC radio. Might still be good, but it is not the original telecast.

Yes, this isn't the CBS tape found a few years back. NFL Films pulled out all the raw footage they didn't use in the highlight film to create enough P-B-P to accompany the radio broadcast. The film should look spectacular since they retrieved the masters & applied today's color correction.

BobT is correct; there are some clips from the telecast, but most of the game footage is the NFL Films stuff we've all seen. Most of the CBS telecast (minus part of the third quarter) is in the hands of a private collector in Pennsylvania who hasn't been able to come to terms with the league for a sale. The Paley Center also has a copy, but can't display it until the legal mess between the owner of the footage and the owner of the copyright (the NFL) gets straightened out.

The owner worked with the Paley center to restore the game.

I think the NFL can afford 1 mill without blinking an eye. How much did they spend on this reconstruction? Jerks.

Exactly. Just pay the man. The NFL is loaded. This is very historic. Also, I wonder if anybody has Super Bowl II. The Packers and Raiders. That has always irritated me. The NFL has all the Super Bowls except for the first two, which happen to be the Packers.

This is about as close as we'll get (at this point in time) to re-watching the NBC telecast. I've seen them all on television, looking forward to reliving being 8 years old again :)

What was the immediate purpose of networks recording live sports broadcasts back then? Did they send them off to the troops in Vietnam or something?

There would be an obvious immediate purpose in being able to pull highlights from the archived footage for sports coverage within newscasts.

Bart Starr is incomparable. One of the great leaders to look up to. Its been really sad to see him have so many health problems recently.

    Athletes in Action/Bart Starr Award
The Athletes in Action/Bart Starr Award is given annually to an NFL player who best exemplifies outstanding character and leadership in the home, on the field and in the community.

Sorry to go off topic / thread crap.

Seems like this is the NFL's way of saying F.U. to this guy who wants a million dollars. Seems like they want him to know they don't even need his tape, they're running the game anyway, and he could've had 30k but now he's gonna get nothing.

The oldest complete NFL telecast, CBS's tape of the 1961 NFL championship, survives now because an Armed Forces Network tape was saved. There might still be surviving videotapes saved for military audiences, but I don't know of any. The only complete videotape of Super Bowl 4 is a black-and-white CBC re-broadcast.
