  2. Perhaps, although I'd say it was unexpected that the likes of Johnny Cash would not only cover songs by the likes of NiN, Soundgarden, and Depeche Mode, but also do them well.

Jo-El Sonnier recorded this terrific cover version of the Procul Harum song 'Whiter Shade Of Pale.'

Maybe not quite as suprising as some, considering Fripp played guitar on the original, but still in awe that anyone but Bowie could do the track justice.

I love love love the classic Darlene Love original but U2 did a spiffy cover of Christmas (Baby Please Come Home):

No, I'm not starting my Christmas listening seven weeks early ...

Aside from Yngwie Malmsteen's over the top shredding, Ronnie James Dio's cover of "Dream On" is pretty good.

Speaking of Whiter Shade of Pale, I really like Sarah Brightman's orchestrally-arranged take in the '90s:

And I also really like Alison Moyet's cover of The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face. Very different from the original (which I also like a whole lot) ...

I don't like Grank Funk either, except for that song. I'll give the original the edge but that's a pretty decent cover.

Not sure any cover version Ferry does would be “surprisingly” good...by this album he had pretty much already cemented his status as a world class cover version machine.

How Close didn't win the show still irritates me to this day. :sigh:
