Gram wasn't even in the band anymore when the album came out the first time.

And frankly Gram by all accounts tried to depose McGuinn as band leader and then checked out and bailed quickly when he realized that wouldn’t fly.

Sweetheart of the Rodeo is a Byrds album, with both the content and number of Gram vocals decided by Roger and Chris, so I can certainly see why they don’t want to turn it into ‘a tribute to Gram Parsons’. Gram certainly had an important role, but ultimately it was a Byrds album. At the time Gram Parsons was still essentially a nobody, and it was magnanimous of Roger and Chris to not erase him from the album entirely after he bailed.

I’m excited for this tour! I hope they’ll come my way.

  5. All who love this record should pick up Bradley’s Barn by the Beau Brummels if you dont already have it . The RSD edition if possible.

Another country folk rock album that also came out in 1968...and was largely ignored at the time.

    A great album.

Wow, really really nice - Marty certainly does justice to the original pedal steel parts (JayDee or Lloyd?) and to Clarence all in one. I would definitely go see this if it came anywhere near to St Loo!!!

BTW, i LOVED this album when it came out - don’t know why but it just really grabbed me.

I think Crosby would make an excellent substitute for Gram

I was at a Marty Stuart show a couple of months back and there was a dude in the crowd wearing a cool "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" jeans jacket.

This sounds like a terrific show and it certainly would go over big in these parts. Bring it!

  10. The interplay of Marty's b-bender and Kenny Vaughan's Rickenbacker is very reminiscent of Clarence White's duos with Roger Mcguinn.

    Four great guitarists!

Forget Crosby.....invite Herb Peterson and have this double as the (almost) 35th anniversary tour for The Desert Rose Band . Fans of 80s country would soak this up. Two reunions in one!

  12. Marty Stuart wears his success and fame lightly and plays with whoever he wants to. He always has.

  13. And I know that. He is an amazing talent and has had a long career-and a HUGE Byrds fan.. His audience had expanded over the past few years with the Americana crowd.

Herb has toured with Chris and John Jorgensen so the Desert Rose Band has essentially reunited before.

I saw a show they did as Desert Rose Band acoustic about 2 years ago.

But I agree I'd like to see Herb included especially if it is a whole tour. He has been Chris's right hand man since pre-Byrds, and especially for the better part of the last 4 decades. Not awesome to cut him loose when there is a bigger potential payday than the intimate gigs they so often do together.

I wouldn't sell it as a DRB reunion though.

And that is a truly great record imo. FBB version of "To Ramona" with Hillman's heartfelt vocal and Pete's pedal steel gets me ever time.

This will be the rare show I go to hoping the performers don't share their political views, not being a big fan of Nugent or Kanye.

Agree; my comments about promoting a dual reunion tour were meant to be tongue in cheek. Herb and Chris did make a lot of good music together though. I saw the DRB at the height of their chart success and they put on a great show.

Very exciting news! This makes me respect Marty Stuart more each day, what a great guy. Marty shares a true appreciation for this music and time is of the essence as the classic artists from this era are aging. When Tom Petty died last year, the odds of a semi-Byrds tribute/reunion seemed almost impossible, but the this particular angle is creative and incredibly interesting from an artistic standpoint.

    Two things not yet mentioned:
    • Roger's view of Sweetheart of the Rodeo aside, part of what makes this gathering possible is that Hillman, like McGuinn, is a born-again Christian. And it is exactly the reverse of this that makes any reunion involving Crosby impossible. McGuinn has stated this explicitly. I think this is sad.
    • We're also lucky this is happening, because Hillman has stated on more than one occasion that he doesn't think Sweetheart of the Rodeo is a very good album. In so many words, he felt is was a bunch of rich, privileged kids' idea of what country music is. I've always tended to agree with him, though (I suspect) like Hillman, I'll concede that it was influential — even if it took some time before it was perceived to be.

Minor point... Hillman is a Christian, but he's not born again. He's Greek Orthodox.

McGuinn cited religion as a reason for not reuniting with Crosby only one time, and that was 14 years ago. Since then, he's talked about his lack of interest in a Byrds reunion many times, and he's never once mentioned religion again. So I'm skeptical it is the only reason, or even the main reason, why he does not want to reunite with Crosby.

McGuinn apparently views himself primarily as a folk musician these days, and has little interest in rock and roll. That may be part of the reason this project has more appeal to him. The album is more folk than rock, and it will probably be more interesting to him than doing the same old three Byrds hits for the millionth time.
