Sugar Shack--Jimmy Gilmer & the Fireballs (both sound great! The Mono is more dry, the Stereo is more wet)
My Boyfriend's Back--Angels (the original Stereo mix or the new mix completed in 2000 by Steve Massie from the original four-track master tape. This new mix has more impact like the original Mono single mix and corrects the obvious fade down on the first chorus in the original Stereo mix)
Deep Purple--Nino Tempo & April Stevens
On Broadway--Drifters (both sound great, the Stereo is more dynamic)
    Two Faces Have I--Lou Christie
Surf City--Jan & Dean (the original Stereo mix or the re-mix. The remix has more sonic fidelity-sound stage, middle impact)
Sukiyaki--Kyu Sakamoto (original Mono mix or the first-time Stereo mix)
If You Wanna Be Happy--Jimmy Soul (original Mono mix or the first-time Stereo mix)
He's So Fine--Chiffons (original Mono mix or the first-time Stereo mix)

    Please Make Any Additions!

    Thanks!:agree:

    Andrew,

I have it in Stereo on a comp from Japan. It has been sometime since I listened to it. I will have to give it another listen. Certainly, I do not want to record a re-processed version.

    Bob:)

Singing Nun is a mono only recording. Skip the fake stereo version.

There are a bunch of corrections I need to make on Bob's list, but I just don't have the time to do it right now. Sorry!:(

    Steve,

Then the version that I have on that comp from Japan must be re-processed.

I may have missed some Stereo versions on my Additional Selections List. If you get the time, corrections are most welcome. :)

    Thanks!

Bob, I love talking about music from 62-63. Great era. I'm just swamped right now (a good thing)...

One quick thing. The stereo version of Sugar Shack has extra overdubbed guitars on it to make it stereo, plus double the echo.

    Steve,

    I understand your busy schedule.

Sugar Shack--sounds like a vote for the Mono version from you!

    Thanks for your assistance!!

Any reason not to use the stereo remix?

Mastered by Steve on Vintage Music Vol 9.

I'd have to go with Grant on this one (mono), since the backing vocals are there through the whole first verse, not just the intro. Not there on the mono.

Is that CD still in print?

What's wrong with the stereo mix?

No reason to go with mono here IMO.

    Luke,

    Thanks for jumping in!

I missed the Rivingtons Stereo version when I posted, I will correct it. Thanks!

    I have Vintage Music Vol.9.

I could use the full length version of Fingertips from Cooley High. I have thought about it, otherwise it will be the Mono mix from the Hitsville USA box.

I do not know if the Don Covay CD is still in print.

Here's some stereo sources for tracks above: Memphis in superb stereo on Ace's Memphis Wham; Wiggle Wobble is stereo on Raging Harlem Hit Parade on Relic; Baby Workout is stereo on Mr. Excitement boxed set from Rhino; Killer Joe shows in stereo on Preppy Deluxe on Ripete (surface noise from vinyl dub - where's the stereo tape for this hiding?); Tell Him is on Tell Him from EMI/UA (might be a Furmanek remix - it's from that era); Papa Oo Mow Mow - our pal Steve at work on Toga Rock II; Loop De Loop is a needle drop on Coolin' Out - 24 Carolina Classics Vol. 3 on Ripete; Be My Baby is in a weak stereo mix on a Spector comp from Japan on JVC - I own that one, but I don't have it handy (out on loan), but I'll find out its exact name for you; Cry Baby on Best of Garnett Mimms - Cry Baby UA/EMI (Furmanek remix possibly). The Exciters and Mimms sets might be available on Collectables now under the same titles - they've leased a lot of those EMI label comps that Ron Furmanek compiled. The only tunes I have above are Be My Baby (kinda weak mix), Memphis (superb), Papa Oo (bang up job - just don't put it on the same disc with Surfin' Bird or you may get sued)!!!, and Wiggle Wobble (a-ok) - the info came from Both Sides Now. Better run through your couch for spare change, especially for that Spector disc...

    Mike,

Thanks for all the above listed information. Before I begin this project in earnest I will pull every CD from the respective years out from my collection. From the standpoint of compiling these lists, it is nearly an insurmountable task to list every title that I have in my collection. I have tried but, I need the reminders from fellow Forum members, as well. I have the Ronettes in Stereo on a what sounds like needle drop from Italy. Frankly, after repeated listening, I am going to go with Mono single mixes on the Ronettes hits. I prefer the Mono of Baby Workout--I have both versions. Thanks for all the tips and for jumping in to contribute! :D

The Stevie Wonder "At the Close of a Century" Box Set has a remixed full version of Fingertips (pts. 1 & 2). Unlike most of the stuff on the box, I think it is mono. That being said, I would probably still go with the Hitsville USA version since it is the hit version and Part 1 does not add as much as, say, Part 2 of The Isley Brother's "Shout".

If you are looking for regional hits, Gino Washington had a big hit in the Motor City with "Out of this World".

Grant Life is a rock, but the radio rolled me!

I say, go with the original mono mixes unless there are stereo versions that match the mono singles exactly.

I vote for the mono "Fingertips" except that I have made a stereo "single" version of it adding just the right amount of reverb. I used the new srereo mix from the remastered "Cooley High" CD. There are a few things I have to get out to you, huh?

    Grant,

The reason that I posted some of the re-mixes is because they often have more impact, like the original Mono single versions, than the original Stereo mixes. In the case of Surf City, I am not aware that the Mono single mix has ever been released on CD--just the original Stereo mix and the re-mix.

Yes, I do look forward to hearing some of your "work".

    Thanks for jumping in.

I didn't know that there are two mixes of "It's My Party". On what CD(s) does the Quincy Jones mix appear, and how do all of the stereo mixes differ from the mono mix?

    Grant,

Too Cute! as mastered by Steve. My favorite version. The Mono mix--I have never seen it on CD, it may be out there. The other Stereo mixes are OK but, I like that original Q mix...hard to describe, it just sounds "right".

Grant, a lot hits from this period have never had their Mono mixes issued on CD, too many, in fact, are missing!

Hey Bob, how's that Marginal Ronettes sound (other than clicks and pops)? Are the mixes any good - do they capture that slammin' Wall O' Sound? The JVC comp is from tape, but the mixes are weak - perhaps Steve could expand on this Spector question a bit...

But, what CD is the QJ mix on?

Bob Lovely Super Gort In Memoriam Thread Starter

    Mike,

The mixes are really pretty good, in my opinion, when you consider that is the Wall Of Sound that you are listening to. The problem: they are so drowned in reverb--worse than the Mono mixes. Their are no pops and clicks (no-noised?). Some have theorized that this anthology (and companion Crystals disc) were made from a tape dub that was used in Europe for LP mastering years ago. Certainly, if it is from a needle drop, it contains no groove wall distortion. There is tape hiss present, so any no-noising was light touch or maybe it was taken from an old LP mastering tape dub? I do not know!
