    Mike,

I only have volumes 1-3, so 4 is on the "to be acquired" list.

    Thanks!

    Bob :)

    Bob,

You really should consider getting that Beatles EP and/or singles box. The stereo "I Want To Hold Your Hand", or hardly any other stereo Beatles will do for a series like this.

I also did not notice "Baby I Need your Lovin' by the Four Tops, or "Every Little Bit Hurts" by Brenda Holloway. In fact, you didn't include much Motown beyond the Supremes and one Marveletts tune, unless I missed something.

Also, "Selfish One" by Jackie Ross sounds the same in stereo as in mono, except that the fade isn't as abrupt in mono.

    3) Come See About Me--Supremes-MONO!
    6) Please, Please Me--Beatles-MONO!-The stereo is missing the harmonica.
    7) Glad All Over--Dave Clark Five-MONO
    8) Twist And Shout--Beatles-MONO
    12) Because--Dave Clark FiveMONO
    13) Can't You See That She's Mine--Dave Clark DiveMONO
    14) Bits And Pieces--Dave Clark Five-MONO

    Bob,

I would diffidently go with the mono of "I Want To Hold Your Hand". The stereo versions just don't cut it. IMHO

    Bob,

On your stereo & mono list I would use...

Do Wah Diddy Diddy--Manfred Mann (Stereo)
    Please, Please Me--Beatles (Mono)
    Twist And Shout--Beatles (Stereo)
    Because--Dave Clark Five (Stereo)
Bits And Pieces--Dave Clark Five (Mono) the stereo has the missing tambourine over dub.

    Bob,

I would use the mono Beach Boys "Fun, Fun, Fun" even though Steve has mastered a stereo version. The mono has the proper fade out that's longer and doesn't have the backing track disappear.

    Grant,

I agree with using the mono mix, but aren't there two slightly different stereo mixes of this or is that just a mastering difference?

I'm sure you know what I mean. The drums on the opening come in hard left and in one version that's all there is, but on another version they also can be heard on the right?

Er...no its not. It is comprised of different takes, though, and has a vocal flub not in the mono.

Nahh. I'd say go stereo. Those twin-track Beatles songs rock...

You might want to track down the 1963 stereo mix. Vocals off to the side, but more of the punch of the mono mix.

    Stereo.

    Dear God, the dry versions!

Despite what Steve may say, I agree here. I like the stereo mix and don't care for the *heavily* EQ/compressed rhythm track on the mono mix.

    Why not stereo?

    Stereo.

Only exists in mono, I believe.

    Stereo.

Any reason not to use stereo?

    Stereo.

    Doesn't exist in stereo.

I haven't heard it yet, but I'd say use the new stereo mix that's coming out August 27th.

No...Steve's mastering has some "garbage" in spots, since something else was on that tape before My Generation and it didn't get totally erased. I'd *probably* say use the mono mix on the upcoming CD, but I haven't heard it yet, so...

Grant Life is a rock, but the radio rolled me!

I never studied the stereo panning on this song like I have the other Supremes tracks but I listen more to the overall sonics and impact. The mono is a dead ringer for the 45 RPM mono single while the stereo mix sounds very good. It is a hard pick between mono and stereo but I advised mono simply because the impact is better.

With Motown stereo, you never know...

All I have is the proper stereo mix and your stereo mix. Gotta be honest, I never listened that closely to way the song is mixed.

I still say mono "I Wanna Hold Your Hand".

    Bob,

Expect more stereo/mono battles in the upcoming weeks!:)

    Luke,

Thanks for info on versions: Mono v. Stereo (Stones, Beatles) and upcoming releases (Who)--a consideration.

Saturday Night At The Movies--seems to me that I remember hearing that the Stereo mix is somewhat different than the Mono single mix.

Dawn (Go Away)--The Stereo does not have the impact of the Mono mix.

I Feel Fine/She's A Woman--personally, I too like the drier versions better but, the wet Capitol versions were the versions played on the Radio--authentic to the time, hence the question.

    Thanks for your votes!

    Re: Additional Selections (Part 2)

Stereo for both, unless you want to use the long version of I'll Cry Instead, in which case you'll have to go with mono. No reason to use the shorter mono mix, though.

    Grant,

There are actually (9) Motown tracks on my lists. With the addition of the Brenda Holloway track, that makes (10). As these lists develop, I am sure we will add a few more. Looking ahead, 1965 will be a big year for Motown hits!

    More Motown:

    Marvin Gaye & Mary Wells

    Once Upon a Time
What's the Matter with You Baby

This was a single where both sides charted. Also Marvin Gaye's first charting duet recordings.

    Marvin Gaye

    Try it Baby
    Baby Don't You Do It

    Martha and the Vandellas

    Live Wire

    P.S. Mono.

Best sources for the Gaye stuff include "The Master" Box Set and the mid-90s anthology. Best sources for "Live Wire" is the 2-disc "Live Wire! The Singles (1962-1972)" from 1993. Short of that, it is available on the currently in-print "Ultimate Collection".

    Suggestions for 1964 - Part 1

Midnight Mary - - Joey Powers

    It's Over - - Roy Orbison (Steve's stereo master)

Stop and Think It Over - - Dale & Grace

It's All Over Now - - The Valentinos (I can't believe you are going to use some cheap cover by a two-bit British group (Luke's already started typing) when you can have the original(just kidding:) ... I would put both on my tape))

    I'm So Proud - - The Impressions

Right or Wrong - - Ronnie Dove (You need at least one RD song on your tape IMHO ... I vote for this one)

    Maybe I Know - - Lesley Gore

I'm on the Outside (Looking In) - - Little Anthony & The Imperials

Such A Night - - Elvis Presley (stereo) :righton:

Today - - New Christy Minstrels

    Stay - - Four Seasons

    Al-Di-La - - Ray Charles Singers

Kiss Me Sailor - - Diane Renay

Pink Panther Theme - - Henry Mancini (stereo) (Who didn't see this movie when it came out ... assuming you are of the proper age)

You'll Never Get To Heaven - - Dionne Warwick

    I Have A Boyfriend - - The Chiffons

Rip Van Winkle - - The Reflections

Puppy Love - - Barbara Lewis

Hey Girl Don't Bother Me - - The Tams

    Harlem Shuffle - - Bob & Earl

    Wendy - - Beach Boys

Neddle in a Haystack - - The Velvelettes (Good Motown that you don't hear very often)

Apologies for repeats ... I am glad that all I have to do is suggest them and not pick them ... you have some tuff choices ... of course, that is assuming that you have some kind of limitation on how many volumes that you make for each year. :)

Good call. I should have thought of that one in my "more Motown" post.

It's on the Hitsville USA box set. Another box set track that I overlooked was Shorty Long's "Devil with a Blue Dress On" which did not exactly burn up the charts at the time, but it inspired a later hit for Mitch Ryder.
