Has this movie ever been put on DVD UNCUT.
I'm not talking about the one out currently that's cut up.
I used to have it on VHS and it was a 2 tape set.

Meet the Temptations? Its available. I had the VHS and loved it then got the DVD and OMG lots longer and a lot of scenes not on the TV movie or VHS. And it is noted NOWHERE on the packaging.

I'm talking about the mini-series that aired over 2 nights on NBC back in 1998.
IIRC total running time for the movie was very close to 3 hours (with commercials cut).
The DVD lists it at 150 min.
When I watch it I get the feeling that parts are missing.
Did you see it on TV when it originally aired?
I recorded it straigfht from the TV the night it aired.
When I got the VHS set (2 tapes) nothing was missing.
I got rid of my VHS set when I got the DVD.
IIRC there something missing just before the 1966 Motown picnic scenes.

    EDIT...
Just checked some of the revies over at Amazon.

There is a scene in which the Paul Williams sings a heart wrenching song, because he is so distress about no longer being on stage as a Temptation. Soon thereafter this scene, he commits suicide.

He Tries to sing 'The Way You Do The Things You Do' and do the dance moves (unsucessfully)

    From memory

They go visit Paul at home. he swears he's fine and nearly kills himself trying a spin. Losing it on his wife. They go to the recording of Papa was a Rolling Stone with scenes of Paul drinking again, losing it on his wife driving to a parking lot and.... All intercut under the making of the record video.

My VHS was a single tape and was obviously edited.

    Been watching this lately.
Does vanybody have the original NBC broadcast on VHS?
How about the VHS 2 tape set sold by NBC.
    Can anybody confirm running times?
The Jacksons Mini Series was released on a 2 DVD set,
why was The Temptations only on 1 DVD.
IIRC, they were both mini-series that ran over 2 nights.

One of the best musical bios ever made - although I'm not sure of it's accuracy. I must have seen this a dozen times and still can't get enough. It runs at least 3 hrs on commercial TV

Well, it was based on Otis's book, which would represent his view of things. I guess the last survivor is the one that gets to tell the story.

There were at least several scenes (the fight between Paul and Elbridge, Melvin's death) that are told differently in the book than in the movie.

I still liked the series. The guy that played David Ruffin was very good.

Right, I'm just not sure how the other's input would have shaped the story. The actors were excellent. I suppose they were lip-syncing - very well done.

This must do great for VH1 & Vh1 Classic as it's always on. Not that it's a bad thing as I think it's very well produced.

Internet Movie Data Base (IMDB) only acknowledges the 150 min. version, and that's always been a trustworthy site.

Just out of curiosity, does anybody know if perhaps this movie was originally made with a theatrical (or maybe cable) release in mind and wound up at NBC instead?

Just while watching a bit of it on VH1 the other day, I noticed there's a lot of places where it seems like profanity may have been overdubbed. Lots of "stuff"s and such where it sounds like another word probably should have been.

According to Otis' book, it was never meant for theatrical release. Also, for the record, there are a great many factual inaccuracies in the movie itself concerning how people died. It seems the makers of the movie (Otis was not as involved as his "executive producer" title suggests) had a problem addressing anyone's death with accuracy. The only death that was mentioned truthfully was Eddie's and, even then, quickly in the 'dinner" scene with Mama Rose, Melvin, and Otis.

If we were to address all the inaccuracies in the movie, it'd take quite a few pages. It's still an entertaining movie that's worth seeing. In fact, I may watch it tonight... ;)

Did anyone buy the cd movie soundtrack from NBC? I bought one back when the movie was on tv for the first time. I have never seen one for sale since.

Yeah, I have it. It's essentially a "greatest hits" compilation with a few other things. "I'm Really Gonna Miss You" - the Smokey tune that he sings at Melvin's funeral is there and a re-take on "Speedo" with Jim Gilstrap leading is there too.
