    Promise you won't laugh.

What in the world does "transparent" mean in regards to speaker cable.

I was looking at one pair where the seller said, "absolutely transparent". I'm totally lost. A cable the size of a small white or black garden hose is not transparent.

Transparent, just means that something does not have a sound of its own. So, if I say that my amplifer is transparent, I am saying that it is like a clean pane of glass, it shows me what is on the recording, with no coloration.

I got to tell you, I can't wait to use that in a conversation.

Again, thanks for the info. Everyday I move closer to a transparent system. Soon I'll be making the leap from a foggy system to a slight dust storm system.

Finally, if a cable is transparent, what is the term for a cable that isn't? "Non-Transparent, untransparent, transparently challenged, anti-transparency disabled"?

Non-transparent would be the word of choice. But colored, distorted, foggy etc. works!

Or even "coloured" if you're in Canada.

    :D

The metaphor most often used to describe the opposite of transparent is "veiled," as though there are veils between you and the music. Or, in the case of some systems I've heard, blankets.
