First there was the WEA target thread, then the first pressings' label thread and now....

I really miss CD longboxes. At the time I guess they weren't really special, because they were common, but now they are sorely missed for the artwork and just the general feeling of buying a CD in a longbox. It just felt like more of an event, y'know? I have fond memories now of going into music stores and seeing all of those pretty colorful boxes with CD's inside. I guess there are still a few being made for some new releases for sale at Sam's Club's and Costco's. If I hadn't let my membership expire, I might have bought me some.
Seeing the big bucks that they go for on Ebay now makes me wish that I had kept ALL of them that I had  (My brother actually did keep most of his- stacked in a closet).

I did manage to keep and preserve 36 of them, which is how many I have now- (after becoming a "collector" in the early 90's) CD case inside box.

Some of the rarer ones I have:
Badfinger "Magic Christian Music" and Billy Preston "That's The Way God Planned It" Apple re-issues
The first self-titled Bryan Adams album with generic A&M longbox
    The Cure "The Top"
Body Count self-titled CD ("Cop Killer"!)
    "Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1"
Mick Jagger "She's The Boss" original Sony version
    Elvis Presley "The Memphis Record"
    Wings "Wild Life"
REM "Fables Of The Reconstruction" (TOTALLY different artwork than the CD cover)
and "Porky's Revenge" MFSL soundtrack in the MoFi plastic "trap" package

How many longboxes do you have in your collection now? Which ones do you regret throwing away?
Longbox buying stories? What's the last one that you purchased? What's the last store that you found some in?

    Thanks!
    James

I have one DCC McCartney, thanks to a fellow member, 3 Mastersound Gold, an MCA Steppenwolf (Nichols mastering) and a couple 3/4 size that are more of a box set situation.

This will probably be ruled as blasphemy, but when I was a freshman and sophomore in college back in 1988 and '89, I cut open the longboxes and tacked them to the wall of my dorm room as wallpaper. I would cut them along the side so that when open, the front cover would be on the left and the back cover would be on the right. They looked cool.

Truthfully, I've never been a real collector of longboxes. I have two longboxes here with mint, unplayed CDs (US pressings). If anyone is interested, send me a PM. Here are the titles:

    * Emmylou Harris Profile II The Best of Emmylou Harris
    * James Ingram It's Your Night

    So I wasn't the only one!:D

My intact ones include all the Beatles and a few solo(some of the early ones had flaps actually like a box not glued). I believe I have the Ryko Ziggy deluxe one and a few others. There all packed in a box in the attic and I haven't seen them for years. I used to have the Beatle ones displayed along a ledge here in my music room but it dissappeared when the walls were re-paneled.

I'll tell ya what. Send 'em all to me so that you don't have to spend any more of your precious time thinking about them!!!:D

...tacky looking if you've got them displayed around your house as artwork

I've only got one longbox: Duke, George – Thief in the Night

I agree with Bradley - long boxes were tacky looking.

Trouble is: they were only slightly better than jewel box packaging, which is REALLY tacky.

How I miss good ol' vinyl album covers. Now THAT was packaging worthy of hanging on a wall - especially if it was framed....

Yes! Please post scans of your favorite longboxes!
    That Eddie Murphy is...um...a classic!(?)
Whatever floats your boat! Post as many scans as you like!
I especially like the longboxes that used different artwork for the front of the longbox than the actual cover of the CD booklet (like the Neil Young "Harvest" longbox had the "doorknob" photo as the cover instead of the titlework of the original cover).

I know I'm getting old when I hear people feeling nostalgic for the artwork on long-boxes.

  15. $4

I just bought these in longboxes:
Rory Block - I've Got A Rock In My Sock
    Rory Block - Ain't I A Woman
    Andy Williams - Greatest Hits
Jimmy Witherspoon - Blowin' In From Kansas City
Sammy Kaye - Best of Big Bands
Kate Wolf - Any Way the Wind Blows

    All $4 each.

    I threw out the longboxes.

I've saved a DOORS long box and I have some SEALED longboxes (w/CDs).

Abbey Road and Best of Gram Parsons. If anyone is interested in those, let me know. Don't really need them.

I still have a couple of large boxes full of them in my parents' attic. I don't recall exactly which ones I saved, but I did keep my complete set of longboxes for the Beatles series, everything from PLEASE PLEASE ME to PAST MASTERS VOL. 2. :D

Still got most of mine also, stored away in plastic. Besides a complete Beatle longbox collection and the Apple stuff, I have the first 2 Chicago's in the thick 2CD versions. That Neil Young long box is also pretty cool!!!!!

I saved all of mine, and probably had over 100 at one point. Unfortunately, a flood at my parents' house took them out, along with a ton of great mid-80s rock posters...:(

    Keith,
This reminds me of something a friend of mine did, only with LPs.
He had some of us over to his place and proudly showed us how he had attached his LPs to the wall with the vinyl still inside. So when someone wanted to listen to whatever, he'd just pull the LP out of the jacket and ...
I got a smile on my face when I read your post and remember this about my old friend.

I never thought the longboxes were something collectible back then and while I kept mine initially, after a couple of moves I got rid of them. I should have known, but as they say hindsight...

That would also apply to all the cool Fender and Gibson guitars and basses I owned back in the late sixties. Now that makes me want to kick myself when I think of the prices those babies go for today.

    Thanks!

I remember the longbox for Talking Heads's Speaking in Tongues looked way different from the actual cover. Who made these artistic decisions anyway?

I remember the first and only longbox cd I ever bought; Jethro Tull's Aqualung as a gift for my father. I was a young kid and still into cassettes (couldn't afford a cd player).

I worked in one of the first CD only stores, and I can still remember getting blasted about the waste of paper the longbox was. (Bad grammar, I know)
Our store got major kudos because we would take the CD out of the longbox for the customer and recycle the paper.

I cut all mine up, too, to make groovy wall decorations many years ago. I had hundreds of the darn things.

    I kept a few, though:

    Paul McCartney - Unplugged
Sting - The Soul Cages (with the "one of the last longboxes" note on it)
Pink Floyd - The Wall MFSL
Neil Young - Arc-Weld (the only triple-thick long box I've seen -- it contained three standard jewel cases)

I think the last longbox I bought was a cutout of Joe Jackson's "Blaze Of Glory" sometime after it went out of print.

Ryan, actually, I still have the long box for Paul McCartney Unplugged too. It's been packed away since I bought the CD in 1991. With all the hoopla about the disc being a limited edition with serial numbers and all, I thought it would be a good idea to keep the longbox. Of course, the serial number on my copy is 154,000 and change. It doesn't seem that limited to me. :)
