The Tony Williams Life Time album that jawaka1000 cited above has nothing to do with the Tony Williams Lifetime band, though I love them all.

Considering that both Ringo and Criss put out albums produced and largely written by Vini Poncia in 1978, it's really not that much of a stretch.

I'm not sure I understand the concept, does the album have to be really bad?

Saying the Tony Williams Lifetime was a 'failed experiment' is pretty incredible, they were years ahead of their time & basically spawned the whole 70s jazz fusion scene.

The Keith Moon solo album certainly fits the bill, I'm a huge fan of his but that was just a coked up vanity project.

Pretty much, but there has to be an array of guests and bonus female backing vocals as I understand it. Bonus points for songwriting credits to outside writers for everything (excepting maybe one co-write to the drummer), too.

Oh. Does this count? Only problem is...it's quite good.

Ginger Baker certainly has some albums that fit right in here. I'm thinking specifically of the two Air Force albums and his first solo album Stratavarious. However, they are also all very good!

...Sandy Nelson spent some years trying to be a drums-forward answer to his labelmate (or stable of labels, anyway) the Ventures, didn"t he? Albums of cover versions of six months ago's

    hits.
Was Don Galluci the name of the singing drummer in the Critters and mid-70s Four Seasons?
After the DC5 petered out, Dave Clark had some singles and at least one non-American album as " Dave Clark & Friends ", which I suppose have never made it to CD.

Tommy Lee counts only if we’re defining the term “drummer” by the most loosest of standards.

He’s a drummer. He spent many years drumming with Motley’s Crue. That you don’t like him doesn’t alter that.

Dude, I got pummeled in a Mötley Crüe thread for my opinion that he wasn’t that great. I believe most considered him a “priemer drummer”.

Anyhow, it seems we’re looking for albums by drummers that didn’t write much in their bands, probably only sang a few songs, plus weren’t multi-instrumentalists. The two Bill Ward albums are good examples; especially the first one.

I’d submit the album The Hot Stuff (2001) by studio drummer Frank Lenz. He’s done some other stuff but THS is his first and he had little experience vocally or as a writer before putting it out.

Perfect example? Doug Clifford's only solo recording, "Doug "Cosmo" Clifford", with Stu Cook on rhythm guitar, Duck Dunn on bass and featuring the Tower of Power Horn section.

Hey! It's the 45th anniversary of this 1972 release!
