can't find my favorite jangly connells ('i suppose') on you-tube , but here's the next best thing form the same album-

beautiful jangly guitar plus 'that' bass sound that also kinda defined that southern college rock era for me .

    cheers,

The harmonics in the solo push it over the top :agree:

Rickenbacker guitars with the "compressor" pedel. Also a Vox AC-30 or Fender Deluxe Reverb wouldn't hurt either.

Yep. Honeyman-Scott influenced Johnny Marr, among others. Here's a quote from him:

"...most of all, the jingle-jangle came from James Honeyman-Scott of the Pretenders. He was the last important influence on my playing before I went out on my own. The first time I played 'Kid' with the Pretenders, I couldn't believe it. I've used that solo to warm up with every day for years"

Honeyman-Scott, in turn, was influenced by Nick Lowe and Elvis Costello. Here's a quote from him:

"I was out in the garden, digging away, and Nick Lowe came on with 'So It Goes,' and then came Elvis Costello's 'Red Shoes.' And they had this big, jangly guitar sound, which was what I'd been wanting to get into for a long while. It was a huge guitar sound, like a big Rickenbacker 12-string or something. I thought, 'Ah, my time is here!' To get that sound at first I used a fantastic Ibanez Explorer-style guitar through an Electro-Harmonix Clone Theory pedal and a Marshall."

a rick 360-12 (12 string) don't NEED no stinkin' chorus pedal. ( though the chained compressors and vox ac 30 top boost amp do help...)

    cheers,

I love the jangle sound as well.

You might like The Dick Prall Band. It was a small group out of Cedar Rapids, IA in the late 1990s. They released one album under this name. Dick later moved to Chicago and still records under his name, but you want the album titled _Somewhere About Here_

reminds me of the mid-80's in orlando. there were at least 2 local bands with 'very' stipe-ish phrasing and cryptic lyrics, not to mention jangly rickenbackers ( one such band- 'stumble-' was jokingly referred to as- wait for it- 'mumble'). the big indie record store back then was called 'murmur', and it seemed like half the people who hung out there spent a lot of time talking about moving to athens ga. those were the days, lol!

Those Poptopia cd's are fantastic...and I couldn't agree more on TPOH. Random relevant story: when I was in the record selling business I had an in with someone from Rhino Records, and they were able to get me large print reproductions of the Poptopia covers, which I had framed. One of my most prized possessions.

    Care to sell those reproductions?;)
The Poptopia CDs are some of my favorite compilations of all time.

Yeah when I heard that song on the radio I wanted R.E.M. to write some songs like that even if it was tantamount to ripping off themselves.

So, how many of those people actually moved to Athens? The key is to be there when the scene starts, not after. :D

Here's the unfortunate part two to the story: They were ruined in a basement flood. Yeah...sucks. But I still have them to remind me of better times.

That is a shame. Sounds like it was pretty bad.

OK, albums then - Sonic Flower Groove by Primal Scream (1987) is still pretty jangly, and You Can't Hide Your Love Forever (1982) by Orange Juice was hugely important in the development of indie jangle (though it's the Postcard singles that were the original inspiration; the LP includes some re-recorded versions).

i know one guy did for sure, i don't think anyone else who i knew did though. and yeah, you're right about timing, too. i was just happy that i could pick up a good college radio station (wprk, rollins college winter park fl.) and that there was a lot of great new music to discover. it was a good time!
