Must admit I'm only a casual fan of Joy Division, but good on them. Love Will Tear Us Apart is certainly a great song. My disappointment was that the Stranglers didn't do that well. Many thanks to CupOfDreams for all her work!

When does the box set come out? I have my credit card ready! (Where's the old Rhino when you need 'em?)

Just to give a little international flavor, I would've add:
"Ca Plan Por Moi"- Plastic Bertrand
    AND
    "Fujiama Mamma"- Frank's Chickens!
and, and 'duh'... something by THE RESIDENTS!!
Not international, but, essential, none the less.

Cool. I have the Rhino box, but I was unfamiliar with the "1234" box. I will have to investigate.

This is a fine post-punk compilation (and never expensive!) of bands like Joy Division, Bauhaus, Gang of Four, Au Pairs and The Fall. And of course well mastered by our host. I wish Steve had done more...

    AF, are you reading this?

A nearly impeccable list. I'm a tad surprised to see XTC so high, but why not?

As for the issue of multiple entries, I have no problem. Clash, Pistols, JD, Jam , etc. are the Beatles, Stones, Kinks of punk/post punk. I'm pretty sure we'd see multiple entries of those bands if we did a similar poll of 60s acts.

Thanks all for the kind responses! This was a labor of love.

Touching on a few of the above posts.

    1) To be honest starting with only 500 was extremely difficult. I wanted to include most of the truly landmark songs but also touch on a lot of the more obscure acts as well. Inevitably I had to leave out some worthwhile songs/acts. The bigger acts did have more songs to start although even some of those did not make the Top 100.

    2) I did have to draw a line on certain acts like the Police. While I actually love the first album they were pretty much mainstream to start so they were not included. Only Blondie's early singles were included. In retrospect I shouldn't have included "Cars" by Gary Numan as it reached #1 in America. I did include Tubeway Army songs but none made the Top 100.

    3) I probably should have extended it to 1984 as a lot of great Post-Punk was still being made. Plus bands like Husker Du could have been included as well.

Anyway this was really fun. Thanks again!

‪Great work CupOfDreams! Many thanks for putting all this together.‬
‪Quite surprised and pleased that Joy Division topped‬ the list. That song was never one of my absolute favourites.
Dead Kennedy's are high up! That's the US members for you. I never listened to them because they came along too late.
    Some great music listed there.

I was shocked it didn't make the Top 100. Just missed.

1-2-3-4 is a great set, but the Rhino box makes a nice supplement, even though the programming (a lot of UK acts notwithstanding) is more of an American college/alternative radio take on the genre.

  22. I get the list but The Soft Boys or Blondie not making the Top 100 is bizarre IMO.

    A superb effort, CupOfDreams.

One of the surprises for me here in the UK is that Blondie seem to be not as well regarded in their native country as they certainly are in the UK. Whilst for similar reasons I did not expect to see Joy Division win, and the Buzzcocks finish in the Top 10.

    Thanks for the list, CupOfDreams.

I have and like some songs on the list and will check out every song on the list that I don't know. I ALWAYS want to hear good/great music I've not heard before.
