I'm surprised at the love for Hell or High Water. I liked it but don't think it's especially Oscar worthy. Also not surprised but was hoping Sharon Jones would get a posthumous nom for best song

I haven't seen a lot of these movies.

Wasn't a big fan of Arrival.

Hacksaw was a very good movie. I thought Vince Vaughn could have received supporting actor for it.

I agree Vince Vaughn would have been a worthy nominee. And a bunch of worthy actresses (Amy Adams, Annette Bening) got left out.

On the other hand, I'm very happy to see Hidden Figures up for best picture, even though the wonderful Taraji P. Henson was overlooked.

Wait, "Finding Dory" didn't get a nomination?

after what happened last year, and thus probably for the wrong reasons, I predict awards for Ruth Negga, Viola Davis or Naomie Harris or Octavia Spencer, Mahershala Ali, Denzel Washington, Barry Jenkins and the "Moonlight" film

I'm also surprised that "Silence" didn't get a single nomination. Imho, one of the best 2016 fmovies.

edit: it had a cinematography nomination but it would have deserved much more.

Hugh Grant was robbed for Florence Foster Jenkins! He's on the screen more than Meryl Streep!

It's a gorgeous-looking movie from the trailer I saw, but I read in several places that it's an ordeal to sit through, particularly the first hour, so I skipped it. I guess you disagree with that, or thought it was worth the hardship?

So, you're saying he should have got the nomination for Best Actress?...

    Apparently not! :)

Can't say it's a huge loss - "Dory" is an entertaining enough movie but I wouldn't call it great.

Of course, I wouldn't call "Nemo" great either! ;)

Silence is indeed a chore to sit through -- in my humble opinion of course...:D

Yeah....Hell or High Water is like watching almost any show on the Investigstion Discovery (ID) channel. Not sure what's so special about it.

I am 100% certain that La La Land will definitely be taking home some awards for sure.

I think La La Land will get consolation prizes--screenplay, song, score, cinematography, costumes, maybe best actress. The big ones will not go to a musical.
And I liked the movie a lot.

Congratulations to the folks behind "La La Land", as they certainly made a nice movie, that for once, Hollywood can be proud of again!

My question is, just how many of these nominated films did our own "Vidiot" work on?

Best picture nominees I've seen so far:

    Hell or High Water
    Hidden Figures
    La La Land

I'm surprised/disappointed that Silence was almost completely snubbed (other than cinematography).

I only saw Hacksaw Ridge and Arrival from that list.

Hacksaw Ridge was my 2nd favorite movie of the year. Arrival didn't make my top 10.

Wanted to see Hell or High Water but didn't come to any of the major theatre complexes near me. Would've had to drive somewhere in the back of Cincinnati to go see it.

Had no desire to see any of the other ones. Though, Hidden Figures I still might go see before it leaves, since Mathematics is one of my fields. As for Fences, it didn't stay around for long. I blinked and it was gone. Now, I believe it is at 2nd run discount theatre.

I don't think Manchester by the Sea came to any of the big cinema complexes near me either. Would've had to drive to one of the smaller cinemas/art-houses in Cincinnati.

I love that movie, but if somehow Moonlight beat it for best picture -- even if it's a matter of voters making reparations for past grievances -- I wouldn't be the least bit upset. I thought Moonlight was a wonderful film -- and at least they wouldn't be giving it to something like that concussion-doctor movie with Will Smith.

Sally Field in My Name Is Doris was just as good as Streep, IMO.

Nothing to get excited about. Disappointed 'Silence' didn't get a nod for best picture or best director. Amazed Amy Adams didn't get a nod for best actress.

I expect either 'Moonlight' or 'La La Land' will win. That's okay.

You's think they'd have included 'Silence' for best picture of only to at least try to balance it out alphabetically - how can all nine nominees be A-M???

Isn't that what everyone said about 'The Revenant'? And the Oscar voters loved that one.
