Looks like you just overpaid:( Do something via Paypal because 100$ is FAR too high for an Elektra pressing. Not sure if it really qualifies as "crappy" - according to one source it is even the rarest vinyl version - but I sold mine years ago and now have a UK original.

Either ask the seller for a refund of 60$ - 40$ would be a realistic price for the record - or claim buyer's protection via Paypal. Because you didn't get what you bought!

Yeah, I'd dig all of these on vinyl again...

regarding Brian who received the wrong record, Discogs doesn't moderate disputes.

A problem that I've had with Discogs is that some of my older listings attach to the wrong pressing of something, so it could be a legit mistake. If contributors are updating listings and it gets taken down a seller listing automatically reverts to the next closest listing or a previous version.

That said, I'd wait a bit to get in touch with the seller directly before filing a Paypal dispute, because generally people are more inclined to work with you before you go with the nuclear option; as that creates hard feelings on both sides. I've had people get pissy with me that we didn't answer a Discogs message right away, when it was sent at like 12:30 AM or something out time!

I've noticed that people buying online tend to automatically assume they are being ripped off for a wrong pressing, but it could be a legit mistake...

On second thought: Ebay has several "Gentlemen" options right now so you might check it if the seller is not cooperative.

But I don't think you need to worry, Paypal offers excellent protection for buyers so there shouldn't be much problems.

  4. Yeah, maybe. However, the cover on this pressing looks completely different from the SubPop pressing. Perhaps he made a mistake, but funny how mistakes like this always seem to be in the seller's financial favor. :)

Doesn't the back have a Sub Pop logo? Look... maybe this guy doesn't know anything about this band, he just got this record that he has never heard, did a quick research and... Bang! Things like that DO happen. Try to be nice to him and see if you can reach a mutual agreement. If he isn't cooperative then....;)

Agreed! I've encountered similar issues with folks in Discogs and 90% of the time an agreement can be reached. For the other 10%, Paypal buyer protection works well.

Another thing: Since you apparently have been living for 20+ years without "Gentlemen" on vinyl: Why rush things now? What's another year? Take your time and you will be able to find a US or UK pressing for a good price. Don't forget: Apparently there is a remaster coming!

I held back and bought the Music On Vinyl pressing of "Black Love" which is very good. And IF I come across an original for a decent price I still could get that. Apart from "Big Top Halloween" no Whigs album is especially hard to find on vinyl. It may take time but...it can be done;)

Just checked back with a friend who has the German Elektra and there IS a Sub Pop logo on the back. So it COULD be mistaken for an SP original. Bet this is what happened here!

    Update from the band: http://theafghanwhigs.com/news/

Deluxe Edition Of Landmark Album Features Remastered Audio Along With Rare B-Sides, Live Performances And Previously Unreleased Demos

Available On CD, Vinyl, And Digitally On October 28th

Band Adds Brooklyn Show To Current Tour On October 5th
If there is one album fully deserving of a coming of age celebration, it is The Afghan Whigs Gentlemen. Since its original release in October of 1993, Gentlemen's lore has grown in stature as fans new and old continue to embrace the album. 33 1/3 published a book about the album in 2008 and Stereogum proclaimed just last month, "From its bombastic opening to its understated end, Gentlemen remains a fine example of what exactly independent rock music is capable of accomplishing."

Rhino are proud to present the deluxe editions of the band's landmark album with GENTLEMEN AT 21. The release features the original album newly remastered along with bonus content consisting of rare B-Sides, live performances and previously unreleased demos. In the UK, GENTLEMEN AT 21 will be released by Mute.

GENTLEMEN AT 21 presents the original record's 11 tracks, updated but still retaining the 1993 album's blistering swagger. The same 11 tracks that have made a visceral connection with fans over the last 21 years - the deeply dark and confessional lyrical content, the no-frills production qualities, and Greg Dulli's soul-baring vocal performances captured on tape. In addition GENTLEMEN AT 21 includes all the original demos for the album, which were recorded at John Curley's Ultrasuede studio space in Cincinnati. These eight tracks show the stark foundation of the songs, giving a deep insight into the creation of the album while at the same time revealing some remarkable moments caught on tape.

The bonus material also includes the original Debonair single b-sides, including "Mr. Superlove" and a cover of the southern blue-eyed soul classic "Dark End of the Street," along with three songs recorded live for KTCL in Denver, previously issued on the What Jail Is Like EP. The set comes packaged with a faithful reproduction of the original sleeve art and its striking front cover image, a homage to Nan Goldin's iconic "Nan and Brian in Bed, New York City," that has proven to elicit just as profound a connection for the fans as the music on the album.

GENTLEMEN AT 21 arrives on October 28th as a 2-CD set for $19.98, digitally for $14.99 as well as the single original remastered LP for $24.98. A triple LP deluxe edition with the bonus material will be issued on November 28 on 180-gram vinyl for Record Store Day at $59.98.

Recorded in Memphis at Ardent Studios and originally released by Elektra Records on October 5th 1993, the album was the band's major label debut after recording two full-length albums for Sub Pop. In the original 1993 biography for the album, Dulli commented: "It was a bad year for me and some of my friends, in terms of relationships and dealing with some of my own little ghosts. A year of just some kinds of remembrances and stuff that I guess I will never be able to forget, especially since I wrote it all down and made a record out of it." 21 years later, we're still all glad he did.

Earlier this year, The Afghan Whigs released their first new album in sixteen years on Sub Pop - Do to the Beast. The band recently embarked on an extensive North American tour, which is underway right now. A new show on October 5th at the Music Hall in Williamsburg in Brooklyn has just been added to the tour schedule today. In honor of the 21st Anniversary of original release date for Gentlemen (October 5th 1993), Bowery Presents have priced tickets at $21 dollars each. Tickets will go on sale this Friday.

Saw the Whigs in a club date at the Waiting Room in Omaha on Wednesday. Tremendous show, which they closed with 'Faded' off of 'Black Love'. After the show I got to shake hands with John C., and Greg D. took time to chat and sign my copy of Do The Beast. Whoo-hoo. :)

Absolutely. Black Love is the album that is like the cross between a movie and album that I recall Dulli talking about wanting to make. Faded is an incredible song.

    Another article in Billboard:
    http://www.billboard.com/articles/n...ulli-talks-bob-dylan-new-tour-gentlemen-at-21

    excerpts:
    Billboard: What prompted the set?

Greg Dulli: I worked for Rhino Records in Westwood back in the day, so I have kind of a connection to them. They did our retrospective record and they came to us and were very enthusiastic about doing a reissue. John [Curley] was heavily involved and we dug up and remastered the demos. I hadn’t even heard the demos in 20-something years. So it seemed like a cool thing to do. We got Jeff Powell, who engineered the original record, to cut the vinyl. This was kind of a family affair, a lot of the folks who were there when we did it were involved in doing this. That was a really cool process.

    later on...
Are there other Whigs albums or Twilight Singers albums you’d want to give the same treatment as Gentlemen?

Yeah, sure. We’ve begun the preliminary stages of doing a Twilight Singers box set. I’ll be digging through the crates in my off time this winter in regards to that project. But I think we got a few years for Black Love. It’s a cool thing to do. If there’s new content then it’s cool. If you’re just slapping another fancy singer on something you already did then no. But if you can bring something unique, it’s a great thing for people who enjoy your music.

The Berlin show was much too loud. All details were drowned - or rather "droned" ;) It wasn't much fun to watch while recognizing songs mostly from lyrics and so I left after 50% of the concert. Good/ bad? I didn't enjoy it. The sound was super bad. But I suspect the band itself might have been good. It's just that hardly anyone could hear it:)

If that set would contain the first two albums I would be in! Since Mr. Dulli describes "Blackberry Belle" as his favourite album of his there is a certain probability:)

I've seen the band 3x since 2012 and I've never left disappointed. The show at Ottobar in Baltimore the week D2TB came out was phenomenal. We have another coming up in DC next month! I would classify this as a "don't miss" event.

Ditto on the Twilight Singers box - would love to get Blackberry Belle on vinyl!
