Very interesting question! I can think of great one-two punches on some of my favourite records, but the first three songs being the best is quite rare I guess. Just to give this thread a little twist, I do really love the last three tracks on some Bruce Springsteen albums:

The Wild, The Innocent, And The E Street Shuffle: Incident On 57the Street, Rosalita (Come Out Tonight), and New York City Serenade

The Rising: The Rising, Paradise, and My City Of Ruins

Magic: Last To Die, Long Walk Home, and Devil's Arcade (excluding Terry's Song, which was added the very last minute as a bonus track)

The Promise: Breakaway, The Promise, and City Of Night/The Way

High Hopes: Ghost Of Tom Joad, Wall, and Dream Baby Dream

Tend to agree on Mezzanine but given that Heroin is my favorite track on VU and Nico, and one of my favorite songs of all time, I'll have to wholeheartedly disagree on this one.

It's one of the better final 4, but still not quite up there....good groove, great chorus, but it doesn't really go anywhere otherwise.

Questions 78 and 68, the fourth track of the album (1st track on Side two) is one of the best tracks of the album.
So, Chicago Transit Authority should qualify as one of the few albums which peaks with the first 4 songs. The 9th track "I'm A Man," which is the last track on Side three is another peak.

    1. Introduction - 6:35
    2. Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is? - 4:35
    3. Beginnings - 7:54

    4. Questions 67 and 68 - 5:03

Disagree big time. Can't You hear me Knocking, Bitch, Sister Morphine, Dead Flowers and Moonlight Mile keep the peak at a steady upward point. This album dips into a valley just once with, I Got The Blues.

The Cars debut...solid album start to finish but loses some steam after Just What I Needed.

    Hmm...I'm trying to think...

The mention of Chicago Transit Authority above is maybe the single most glaring example I can think of. It literally has all the star-studded tracks immediatedly upfront. As was done above, it has to be stretched to the "first four songs" though - Questions 67 & 68 is arguably my favorite Chicago song of all-time! And the best one on that specific album. That and "Beginnings" I'd say.

Oh, and definitely Houses Of The Holy (as I mentioned in another thread). The entire album is of course great (and critical to the whole), but none of the tracks surpass the trio of "The Song Remains The Same / The Rain Song / Over The Hills And Far Away". Arguably the greatest three tracks to lead off any album if you ask me. Well, if it weren't for that one slightly-significant album released by some group named "The Beatles" in 1967. :D

Not that the rest of the album is bad but it sure loses steam after the first 3 songs.

I think the first three songs on HOTH-especially the first two-are stronger than those on that '67 Beatles abum. Just sayin'.....

Except that Can't You Hear Me Knocking is better than any of those songs in my opinion.
