We're strictly on the Honor Blackman system here these days; she was the original leather suited, kinky booted, high kicker. The A&E sets work. Did they really never show the pre-Emma Peel Avengers in the U.S.?

CTS, UK was the studio. Listen to this, same studio, same engineer.

No, Jack Clegg, Cine-Tele Sound (CTS) in Beautiful Bayswater.

The main studio was a HUGE room, a converted banqueting hall previously owned by the something called the Whiteley's Gentleman's Dining Club. The room had this wonderful natural echo. You can hear it clearly on everything recorded in there, including THE AVENGERS stuff. Beautiful sound.

Even on this dreadful squeaky transfer.

Thanks for the history of where that reverb sound came from, Mr. Hoffman. I could always recognize it to identify where the movie was made, the UK, even their reverb had a British accent. I first heard it as I said before on a 15" B&W tv in mono which made it softer and thus more dreamy and that harpsichord piano at the end was more louder and up front. The french horns at the beginning of 1974's "Murder On The Orient Express" train departure scene has the reverb much more pronounced and with a very nasally or posh British sound...

But that Casino Royale video was shockingly different and 3D and so much better. Love Herb Alpert's work and the way they recorded brass instruments. How did they get the instruments to be so far on each side of the left/right stereo channels? Talk about a long throw across the room for reverb to travel.

Well, that was just the style back then. The orchestra was recorded at CTS, Herb's trumpet was recorded in Los Angeles. You can hear the difference on the record.

I had to wait about 4 decades to see the Honor Blackman episodes. I think it was the late '90's or early 2000's. I couldn't see her in as good a light as Emma Peel's quietly sophisticated "cheeky" persona vs Blackman's which I more associated with her role in "Goldfinger" which is quite different. IOW I much prefer Peel's portrayal in The Avengers over Blackman's.

I have that CD, and on a 3 disk set of Laurie Johnson music, one disk is entirely music from the Emma years, but if it was available, I would like a complete set of the music, like the 3 disks of The Prisoner music from Silva Screen.

Couple of observations - The Big Why on that Varese disk really turns me on, the whole theological issue there in a jazzy cocktail mood thing :)

I ordered a cd featuring music from the Tara years but it got lost in shipment :(

I wish I still had the A&E DVD series of Honor and Tara, but I sold them (for pittances no doubt) in some purge years ago :(

PS Any cd series featuring all Avengers music would be nicely augmented with Mein Liebling, Mein Rose

Oh, that question. I was thinking the other, more obvious question.

The answer to which, of course, is "Yeah; damn, she was, wasn't she...?" ;)

I need to correct the Emma Peel reference.

What I meant to say is I prefer the episodes with Diana Rigg instead of Honor Blackman. I can't remember their character's name. I assumed Emma Peel was Rigg's character name and Blackman's character name I can't recall.

The region B Blu-Ray’s from the UK are stunning quality. Accept no substitute.

A&E began showing them in the late 80s, but before that they hadn't been on in the US. I think they were shown in Canada in the 60s.

Anyone know why The Avengers typically had as many 26 episodes per season, way more than what most British sitcoms and dramas have per year?

  20. I went with the substitute because I don’t have an all regions player, the price is great, and the dvds got “good” (not great) reviews. I first watched these shows ona 12” BW tv so I’ll still be experiencing a great improvement over that.

I have had that set since it came out, but noticed it had gotten quite pricey. But it seems it has been re-released, and the whole Diana Rigg period is now available again in a bargain box set.

I have only seen one Honor Blackman episode. I thought she did great in Goldfinger. But Diana Rigg is my iconic ideal, and as a consequence I cannot be at all objective about her. I simply cannot imagine someone equaling her let alone being better.

From what I gather Patrick MacNee agreed with me.

Probably best you never lay eyes on the UK Blu-Ray’s then. You don’t want to know what your missing. Trust me, I’ve owned them all.

  24. Yeah it's very unlikely I'll ever view the Blu-Rays, but I'll take your word they are outstanding.

I remember seeing it on Canadian TV in my early university days (1967-8 or so).
