As you've no doubt noticed, I've recently sort of re-discovered one of my fave pop artists of the Sixties, Peter Max...those wonderful electric colours, fading rainbow-fashion across the canvas...the fanciful characters, leaping through the air, etc.

In retrospect, I'm a little surprised that the Beatles, during their psychedelic/hippie period, didn't (as far as I know) consider Peter Max to design an album cover ad/or poster advert for one of their '66-'68 period records; would've been a fantastic fit, IMO. They did use The Fool for a few things who, in my estimation, were sort of second-rate Peter Max in the graphics department anyway. Why not use the real artist?

I'd love it if Apple would consider commissioning Mr. Max to design the graphics of a future Beatles release (say, a compilation of B-sides, 2-CD expanded best-of or such). That'd be fantastic, and colourful, which is what a new Beatles album cover should be.

I always thought he was the trippiest character of the Sixties:

My big dream: Zemeckis ditches his silly motion-capture idea for Yellow Submarine, hires Peter Max to design a new animated version, heading up a team of crack digital animators and renders the new version in 3-D. With, of course, Apple licensing the actual Beatles music for the glorious new film...

Off-topic, but I miss the lysergic countercultural switched-on goodness that was Eye magazine...

Count me in as diggin' Peter Max!!!

I'm thinking Peter was a big name and the Beatles wanted to "discover" somebody. Just a hunch. I could be wrong.

Thanks for that, Hard Panner! (Owner of the Beatles' stereo albums, I'll wager! :D)

I think you're absolutely correct, the Beatles were looking for new talent to hook up with Apple, etc. Max was already well-established at the time.

You know it!!! Though, I do have the Mono Box, too.

Yep. Looking for a feather for their cap.

    Totally agree!

Yes, he did. Apologies, I didn't mean in any way to dis Edelmann's (and the other animators') fantastic work.

I love that film; the "Lucy In The Sky" sequence in particular was well ahead of its time. And I collect Yellow Submarine items; books, posters etc.

I just wish Max had done/could do something with/for the Beatles at some point...

He did this sleeve for Yes in 1994... (The album was recorded using an Apple Mac so there is a sort of tenuous Beatle link :unhunh: )

From the look of it, it appears Yes were on a budget. ;)

The Peter Max "Say No More" album cover for Badfinger, is very nice. Max autographed my promo poster of it.

He's always been one of my favorite artists.

  23. I never liked the Talk album cover. I always thought that, great, Yes hired Peter Max and all he could come up with was THAT???

I'll agree with that, not one of his best. But, then again, we don't know what the band asked for - the band members could have all had their own ideas (I speak from experience on this), and we don't know if he had designed other (different) versions of the cover and the band rejected them. Ya know, "a camel is a horse designed by committee".
