ok I just read the press release and it sounds like a ...wait for it...PERFECT reissue! But, the cynic in me will wait until it arrives...I still think the MPI videotape was better than the last DVD issue.

THIS was the movie I saw on WKBW's Movie For A Sunday Afternoon in the 70's which literally changed my life...I can't wait to see this!!!!

It certainly sounds pretty great, and I couldn't be more delighted.

One question is whether, along with the newly created 5.1 remix, the original mono mix (or Rutan's restoration of the mono) will be included?

    But still - I can't wait.

    more HELP info

Apple Corps Ltd have announced the eagerly anticipated DVD release of The Beatles’ second feature film ‘Help!’ on October 30th (October 29th ROW) which will be marketed and distributed by EMI Music.

Directed by Richard Lester, who also directed the band’s debut feature film ‘A Hard Days Night’, ‘Help!’ made its theatrical debut in 1965. The story follows The Beatles as they become passive recipients of an outside plot that revolves around Ringo's possession of a sacrificial ring, which he cannot remove from his finger. As a result, he and his bandmates John, Paul and George are chased from London to the Austrian Alps and the Bahamas by religious cult members, a mad scientist and the London police.

In addition to starring the Beatles, ‘Help!’ has a witty script, a great cast of British character actors and features 7 classic Beatles tracks, including:

    • ‘Help!’

    • ‘You're Going To Lose That Girl’

    • ‘You've Got To Hide Your Love Away’

    • ‘Ticket To Ride’

    • ‘I Need You’

    • ‘The Night Before’

    • ‘Another Girl’

The DVD will be a 2-disc set. Disc 1 will feature the original film digitally restored with a newly created 5.1 soundtrack, while Disc 2 contains an hour of extra features, including:

•The Beatles in Help! – 30 minute documentary about the making of the film with Richard Lester, the cast and crew. Includes exclusive behind the scenes footage of The Beatles on set.

•A Missing Scene – Featuring Wendy Richard

Released thru EMI, does that mean they have access to the vaults so they can make a surround mix of the music, but if they do a surround of the film audio extracted from a mono soundtrack, then I would be skeptical.

Ed Bishop Incredibly, I'm still here

While this one might be better than the misguided project that was Artisan's AHDN, just the mention of a 5.1 soundtrack is unnerving(though if the original mono soundtrack is also included--as it was for YS--that makes up for it). I was no big fan of the songs overdubbed in stereo for the old VHS/LD editions, and 5.1, unless actually taken from the multis(and assuming there are sufficient other elements to make a workable mix)will probably sound more wonky than fun.

That said, I'll buy it if they put it out, but...HELP! is no AHDN, which I was painfully reminded of one night many weeks ago when I insisted my wife watch this one with me. She did a hearty critique of it, cited everything that was wrong(the plot, the silly pretentiousness of the whole thing, attempts at humor that really fall flat)and what was right(the music, of course; a few locales; and some of the Beatles' performances--Ringo really was very charming here).

Of course, this one really isn't 'eagerly anticipated' at all, since it was already out on DVD before. Had they said this about LIB, I'd agree, although once you've seen it, it's hard to feel eager to see it again...:D

It'll be slightly more "eagerly anticipated" in the UK given that it's never received a digital release here. All we have is our old VHS (or a DVD import if we managed to find one).
