cello seems to be more prominent in the mono mix... Agree and vocals sound better as well IMO> MONO for me and perhaps the German Stereo for SFF, PL, Baby Man. sean
There is an awesome fan made stereo mix from the video game, that I acquired. The ending has the stereo crossfade and sounds absolutely amazing. I’d share it if I knew how to.
True for the mono CD. But the mono vinyl reissue is a different thing. Better than everything else. SFF has *real* drums and BYARM just rocks. The CD was probably a flat transfer from the mono master tapes.... Stereo: The German LP (pink cover) beats everything else.
I just did another comparison between the MMT mono reissue and the original UK mono 45rpm EP. The mono reissues are great, of course, but the original UK first presses beat them in punch and clarity. This is especially true for MMT, probably because of the 45rpm speed. Again, the reissues are great, but I guess that 40+ years of master tape storage between original and reissue does affect the sound.
Overall STEREO on this one for me. I will say some songs sound better in MONO. If I had to choose one it would be STEREO but I have both and listen to both. I am not a fan of Your Mother Should Know in MONO. It is just a matter of preference. Enjoy both and if you haven't heard both versions I recommend all fans to listen to both.
Like Ebony & Ivory, they both exist in harmony. Mono when I want "The way it was meant to be heard". A punchy, rock version as I think John intended. Stereo is for when I am in my psychedelic, flower power, spread candy and joy to the world mood.
Interesting. For me: both! I prefer mono for The Fool On The Hill, I Am The Walrus, Strawberry Fields Forever, Baby You’re A Rich Man and All You Need Is Love (many have longer fades) Your Mother Should Know and let me add Blue Jay Way are better heard in stereo IMHO
For me: MMT - mono The Fool On the Hill - stereo Flying - mono Blue Jay Way - mono Your Mother Should Know - stereo I Am the Walrus - mono (preferably the US single mix) Hello, Goodbye - stereo Strawberry Fields Forever - '66 stereo Penny Lane - mono Baby You're a Rich Man - mono All You Need Is Love - mono
MONO Capitol for me. I prefer it to the 2014 Mono reissue. I did a side by side comparison with the 2014 mono reissue and a Scranton Capitol Mono, the Scranton had more clarity, more sparkle, more vibe for sure. The reissue sounds way better than the L.A. Capitol or the Terre Haute pressings I compared.
Is this a joke ? (genuine question - I mean no disrespect). This is one of the most obvious example of differences between mono and stereo versions in the Beatles canon ! Listen to the stereo Blue Jay Way: "There's a fog upon LA..." and then there's the sound of strange backing vocals (like some ghosts chanting or something) . And that goes all through the song: each time George sings a line, there are those ghost vocals punctuating. Now take the mono mix: those strange voices are simply absent.
How old is that comment? And let me defend myself, which I find I have to do that a lot lately on this forum. I was questioning this: BLUE JAY WAY basic recording- 6 Sep 1967 additional recording- 7 Sep, 6 Oct 1967 master tape- 4 track 3d generation [a] stereo 7 Nov 1967. edited. UK: Parlophone SMMT 1 (EP) Magical Mystery Tour 1967. US: Capitol SMAL 2835 Magical Mystery Tour 1967. CD: EMI CDP 7 48062 2 Magical Mystery Tour 1987, EMI EP box set 1991. mono 7 Nov 1967. edited. UK: Parlophone MMT 1 (EP) Magical Mystery Tour 1967. US: Capitol MAL 2835 Magical Mystery Tour 1967. CD: EMI EP box set 1991. Lewisohn notes editing but does not explain. Stereo [a] includes a backing vocal track mixed center, part of it backwards, that is hardly used at all in mono . It should read "not used at all in mono." I asked to see if some elements were retained in the mono mix which I wasn't hearing. Geesh! You may have meant no disrespect but I sure feel like I was being schooled yet again! Another thread which I will leave.
