For me it's definitely "The Long Goodbye: LCD Soundsystem Live at Madison Square Garden". 3 hours of fantastic music by a band at its peak.

Wilco's Kicking Television gets my vote, as far as recent releases (last ten years).

  3. Interesting: I coincidentially just listened to Kicking TV, was blown away, and thought I'll look for a threat "Best live album" on the forum to share my excitement.
Here's the thread and the latest entry is ... this album.

    +1

Just listening to the brand new Gary Clark Jr's live album and it is much much better than I have expected. Great mix of soul, blues, hard-rock and funk with a delicious loose jammy vibe.

  11. This one heads the list, or any list of live albums for that matter, & I should add a little promotional note here for the "Roadcase" series of downloads of their live shows that Wilco offers (Jeff Tweedy solo acoustic & TWEEDY Band live shows too)- numbering 45 releases at this point.

~"Kicking Television: Live in Chicago" by Wilco (2005)
~"Live In New York City" by Paul Simon (2012)
    ~"Everybody's Talkin'" by The Tedeschi-Trucks Band (2012)
~"Live From The American Ballroom" by Donna The Buffalo (2001)

A number of live releases, archival & otherwise, by Richard Thompson & Leonard Cohen have also been very impressive.
Loads of great Grateful Dead Archival Releases & special kudos the The Allman Brothers Live At The Fillmore East Box Set too.

    Richard Thompson/Richard & Linda Thompson:
~"The Chrono Show" (2004) by Richard Thompson
~"In Concert, November 1975" by Richard & Linda Thompson
~"Live From Austin, TX" (2005) by Richard Thompson
~"Live Warrior" (2009) by Richard Thompson
~"Live At The BBC" (2011) by Richard Thompson/Richard & Linda Thompson

    Leonard Cohen:
    ~"Live In London" (2009)
~"Live At The Isle Of Wight 1979" (2010)
    ~"Songs From The Road" (2010)
    ~"Live In Dublin" (2014)

  13. I just chimed in over at this not so great poll/thread here myself about "Kicking Television: Live in Chicago" by Wilco (just in case you're still looking for some place to crow about it's wonders)...in the the poll it was my "Other" album choice...the one I voted for that was a choice in the poll was "Live At Leeds" by The Who...and honestly I prefer the Wilco- quite probably my fave live album ever at this point.

Two recent two disc live releases that I've been digging:

Of Montreal - Snare Lustrous Doomings. It's great to hear them rock out as a band here and you really get the feel of a live performance as the audience gets increasingly raucous and enthused throughout the show. This recording from 2014 covers the preceding decade of their output very effectively, with a particular emphasis on the Hissing Fauna era. I also enjoy their cover of Fairport Convention's "Time Will Show The Wiser" here.

King Crimson - Live in Toronto. Sadly, I have not been able to see the new incarnation, so this release is essential listening for me. It's great to hear sax/flute master and Islands era alum Mel Collins back in the fold. Though I enjoy some of the elaborate percussive arrangements, Collins often steals the show for me, providing that direct link to their past. We get to hear plenty of essential classics and deep cuts, some of which haven't been revisited since the early 70s. So the show has more of a retrospective feel to it, which is rather unusual for King Crimson but fitting for this juncture in their arc and skillfully executed.

What are some newish live albums that have been doing it for you?

  16. Could be my favorite live record ever. (Released 2011). Crystal clarity. A full night out with Pete:

In terms of live jazz albums of the last 10 or so years, here are some that I really like:

    Charles Lloyd, Sangam (2006)
Charles Lloyd, Rabo de Nube (2008)
    Ornette Coleman, Sound Grammar (2006)
Sonny Rollins, Road Shows Vol. 1 (2008)

Rabo de Nube gets my vote for best jazz CD of the 2000s. Sangam has more of a "live" feel than Rabo de Nube, and it might have more appeal to non-jazz fans (maybe). Sound Grammar and Road Shows Vol. 1 are on their way to becoming critically recognized representative/entry point/classic works of Coleman and Rollins -- which is crazy to think about when one considers the early classics with which they are associated (Shape of Jazz to Come, Saxophone Colossus, etc).

Dead Can Dance, Toward the Within, is a fantastic live album. Very, very well recorded, and crowd noise doesn't interfere with music.
