Todd Barkan clearly said that The Last Waltz includes some from the third sets (on September 5 & 6). And the sequences of The Last Walts are as follows. Disc 1 : August 31, 1980 Disc 2 : September 1, 1980 Disc 3 : September 2 & 3, 1980 Disc 4 : September 3, 1980 Disc 5 : September 4, 1980 Disc 6 : September 5 & 6, 1980 Disc 7 : September 7, 1980 Disc 8 : September 8, 1980 It is quite tough to confirm that Evans played on Sep. 8 actually. All I could say is that the schedule of Sep. 8 was empty and he could have played. But there’s no evidence to confirm it.
Late to this thread and I’m dropping in with a random post, but the XRCD of VILLAGE VANGUARD and the AP Gold CD of WALTZ FOR DEBBY are two of the best sounding CDs in my collection. My Foolish Heart is such a beautiful composition.
The Nonesuch label is having a 50% off sale for the next 24 hours "Just enter the promo code AUTUMN at checkout." for us Bill Evans fans that means the "Turn Out the Stars: Final Village Vanguard Recordings 1980" for 50% off, though sadly the only format they're offering is MP3 (that said, $17 is fair). Too bad as I'm grabbing some discounted FLACs by Joshua Redman, Brad Mehldau, and others.
Can anyone ‘hear’ what the people speak at the Village Vanguard on June 25, 1961 and write it down here? On any part, any fragment.
I've been in a CTI rabbit hole lately, and a hard to get out. In that hole I found this one: Bill Evans and CTI... Love both, but it's strange to see those names together. Thought it would be an interesting theme for November - Rarities !! Do you have some Bill Evans rarities ? Memorabilia, books, records, photos... Events from his life (professional, personal) that you think are unique ?
It is not a one-of-a-kind item, but the filmed interview/discussion between Bill Evans and his brother is very special. Bill was extremely close to his brother, which makes it more profound.
I am always amazed by the beauty of Bill Evans playing throughout his entire career. But The Last Waltz and Turn Out The Stars: The Final Village Vanguard Recordings are stunning. What a genius.
There is no variation of vinyl pressing of Turn Out The Stars. Only Mosaic box. There has been no vinyl of The Last Waltz.
Q for anyone: Which of these two sets is better, in terms of sound and performance? And is there any difference between the 1996 and 2009 issues of Turn Out The Stars? Thanks!
The Last Waltz for me. As for the last trio, the later, the better, performance-wise. Unfortunately the mastering of TLW is heavily compressed and sounds metalic.
The first editions of Consecration (Alfa Jazz CDs issued 1989), which compiles the first sets of the Keystone Korner performances, sound marvelous.
Turn Out Stars is also fantastic indeed both for performance and sound. However, it is not complete in any sense, which is regrettable.
Bill Evans commented that there were recording problems the first couple of nights which I think is why only a few tracks were included (not that I wouldn't be curious to hear the rest).
I just wanted to drop by and say that Bill Evans has been one of my favorite musicians for years and years. One of the great things about his discography is you can reach for one of his albums in your collection with a blindfold on and you can almost guarantee it that what you picked will be a good album.
And hearing the albums is certainly believing it! Remarkable consistency. Such a genius and someone of exquisite taste.
He also said that the Friday (IIRC) performance which was not recorded was the best. However, the thing is that a musician's self evaluation is not always right.
Marc Johnson has said in the 1980s that it was nothing but regret that Keystone Korner performance was not recorded. However he changed his position eventually. And in the 1990s, he spoke ill of the CD (Consecration). Presumably he did because he did believe that the record company paid no money to Evans' children. (I don't know if he was right.) And I don't know if he changed his position agein after Consecration and The Last Waltz were clearly authorized in the USA. Did anybody know what he said on Consecration and The Last Waltz after 2000?
