EXCELLENT covers I might add. They have been known to do a bunch of snippets of songs live as well, like Led Zeppelin's No Quarter, etc.

Slayer - In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida from the Less Than Zero soundtrack (I'll take this one over the original any day).

Anthrax - they've done TONS of covers, all of them great. Just something about the band captures these songs well:

    Got The Time (Joe Jackson)
    Cowboy Song (Thin Lizzy)
    Bring The Noise (Public Enemy)
    Auf Weidersehen (Cheap Trick)
Ball Of Confusion (Temptations) (already mentioned)
    Pipeline (Chantays)
    Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (Black Sabbath)
    Watchin' You (KISS)
    Parasite (KISS)
And the list goes on and on....

Joan Jett's remake of the Mary Tyler Moore theme song was decently heavy.

EDIT: This has already been mentioned but it's still pretty darn good, eh?

This song was used in some TV show or movie (not Mary Tyler Moore obviously), but I can't recall where I heard it.

I think it was used in "CLUELESS"??

It's also been used in some commercials.

I was waiting for someone to sort out the "borderlines". Thanks. One man's heavier is another man's harder.

Minor Threat's cover of "Steppin' Stone" is pretty hilarious.

Husker Du's version was better (and probably was what "inspired" Joan's version). And they were from Minneapolis, too.

Yes were known to admire Vanilla Fudge and aspired to do fantastic makeovers of pop songs with heavy and light contrasts. So, I would submit Yes' "America" as a valid heavy cover version of a well-known pop song. In fact, the 45 edit used to sound pretty damn heavy on FM rock stations. WRIF played it more often than "Total Mass Retain". Their cover of "Every Little Thing" qualifies, and perhaps "I See You", "No Opportunity Necessary No Experience Needed"? They used to play "It's Love", "I'm Down" and "Eleanor Rigby" which I think are captured in some legitimate releases. To me, the remakes are all much more heavy than the originals.

Pink's live cover of Babe I'm Gonna Leave You is surprisingly heavy.

Robert Palmer did a very loud and heavy cover of Stupid Cupid, but never recorded it.

  25. OK, the original wasn't a huge hit, but The Move covered "Don't Make My Baby Blue", which was written by the Barry Mann/Cynthia Weil team, and originally recorded by Frankie Laine.
