What's on Best of Cream that hasn't been covered already ? Just curious.

The criminally abbreviated single version of "White Room" comes to mind...

Nothing really. Besides having the single edit of "White Room" it was the first time on LP for "Spoonful" in the US and "I Feel Free" in the UK / Europe. But I think it is nice to include early and/or big selling and popular compilations in these ABA threads.

Did I mention that Cream played a gig in my little suburban town's Catholic high school gymnasium on March 26, 1968? It was a fund-raiser for the Student Council. Tickets were $3.00. Notice the basketball hoop behind Ginger:

I know our host states emphatically that WoF was never mixed to mono (thanks, Steve!), but I'm not sure he meant to include the singles. It's also not clear, at least to me, whether the fold downs were sourced from the "pure" stereo mixes or from the HSG-mucked versions (with appropriate compensations). The latter strikes me as beyond foolish, but what do I know?

This must be the best music for a commercial ever!

I found a thread about this single where Steve said: "Nothing from WHEELS OF FIRE was originally mixed to mono from the eight tracks. NOTHING.", so I take it that includes any singles then. :)

But wasn't the whole point of the HSG thing that it would work better in mono, so wouldn't it make sense then if they used that version if any folding had to be done?

I don't think so. My understanding is that HSG processing allowed the STEREO version to sound acceptable in mono, without requiring either a true mono mix or a folddown. In other words, you could distribute a single HSG stereo product (from a single mix) and everybody would be "happy" - well, happy enough.

I was trying to suggest that if you wanted to do a folddown and the pre-HSG stereo mix was available, it made sense to use that rather than the post-HSG stereo album mix that would require effective removal of that processing.

You might find this hard to believe, but The Who played here four months before Cream. I still live about a mile away from the school.

Holy c$@p, I grew up not that far away, in Linden, and I had heard this from a friend who went to UC but I never believed him! I have to go back in time and apologize.
