"The Dog Stars" novel by Peter Heller - your cast choices for fictional movie

I have been reading this novel and it is really, really good. All the time while reading I was amazed how well fleshed out those two leading characters are and was pondering the question of leading roles and which actors could/should be playing those two (Hig and Bruce Bangley) in a movie - AFAIK there is no movie in the making ?

So asking all those of you, who read this yet, what would be your cast ?

Great book and one of my favorites.
Would make a great flick if taken seriously and not turned into a popcorn extravaganza.
