"Rain" - The Beatles......I think it's due to the drumming, and the drone type of singing. Of course the backwards stuff as well.

You're right, it's more "Rain" than "Taxman".

    "What in the World?" updated:

The Beatles - "It's Only A Northern Song", "It's All Too Much", "Rain", "Being For The Benefit of Mr. Kite"
Zager and Evans- "In The Year 2525"

The Manfred Mann song "Semi-Detached Suburban Mr. James" is mentioned by the Dukes as an influence on "What In The World?", but I just don't hear it. Though, I do hear "Semi-Detached" on other Dukes songs.
So we can put the song on the comp but not as an influence on "What In The World?" unless someone can point out something that I am missing.

On the comp as a general influence on the Dukes:
Manfred Mann - "Semi-Detached Suburban Mr. James"

    "Your Gold Dress":

The Yardbirds - "Turn Into Earth"
The Yardbirds - "He's Always There"
    The Rolling Stones - "She's A Rainbow"
The Nazz - "Open My Eyes"*

This song can apply to a couple of Dukes tracks.

Hmm... You are dead on with "She's A Rainbow", but I don't hear "Stop, Stop, Stop" in there. If you could point to the parts that sound alike, I'll give them another listen. BTW, while going through my Hollies stuff, I have found many songs that can and will be on this comp for other songs!

Hey, thanks for letting me know, it means a lot to me. I really thought I'd get more participation on this thread. There are tons of 60s psych fans and tons of XTC fans here on the forum - maybe there's not a lot of overlap, dunno.

If anyone has any idea, any songs to add, even to the songs already discussed, please jump in.

So as mentioned, I will make some artwork for anybody interested in making their own versions of these comps. The title of the comp, as mentioned in the old thread, is still the same. It''s called 'The Songs We Were Sensing'. You might know about an internet comp from a few years back called 'The Songs We Were Singing' which was a collection of songs that inspired The Beatles. Well, I smashed together that title and one of XTC's better known songs to make a psych sounding title for this comp. Hope ya like it.

Just relistening to The Rolling Stones' "Their Satanic Majesties Request" - There are so many songs that have sounds the Dukes would use. We'e already got "She's A Rainbow" in the comp. Which other ones would you include (I've marked my picks with an "*")?:

    Sing This All Together
    Citadel*
    In Another Land*
    2,000 Man
Sing This Altogether (See What Happens)
    She's A Rainbow*
    The Lantern*
    Gomper
    2,000 Light Years From Home*
    On With The Show

    Maybe more - maybe less?

I believe the sound of the banjo, in "Stop, Stop, Stop", with the heavy delay..almost sitar like arpeggio is aped in the parts of "Your Gold Dress", before the fuzz guitar start ups. It is also played with the melody vocal.

Lots of perceptive observations in this thread!:righton:

    I'd like to add to 25 O'clock:

    Incense and Peppermints--Strawberry Alarm Clock
Time--Pink Floyd--the clock intro (it's not from the 1960s, but the reference is unmistakable, at least to me!)

Oh, okay, yeah, you're absolutely right. I guess I wasn't listening to the correct parts of each song. So, yeah, The Hollies "Stop, Stop, Stop" is on the comp for "Your Gold Dress". It may even be on the comp for another song before we're done.

Ya see, this is why I need another set of ears for this project. Many thanks!!!

The Hollies - "Everything Is Sunshine"

While going through all of my Hollies - Damn, I'm hearing this song on more than one Dukes song. I hear some "Vanishing Girl" in the there, but a little "Pale and Precious" and maybe a few other Dukes songs.

Also, we gotta add to the general influence list:

Traffic - "Hole In My Shoe"

  20. Andy Partridge quote.

Andy: “ ‘My Love Explodes’ is The Yardbirds' ‘Over Under Sideways Down’ mixed with The Pretty Things, or anyone who had an armful of maracas and a basin haircut.”

  21. Andy Partridge:

Andy: “ ‘What In The World’ is bits of Manfred Mann, bits of ‘Only A Northern Song’ and ‘It's All Too Much’; there's also half a dozen ECM records spun in by hand.”

Be curious to know what Manfred Mann song(s). ECM.

Okay, I'm gonna add The Rolling Stones "Gomper" to the list for "Vanishing Girl". Call me crazy, but, I'm hearing it.

  23. Hard Panner

Hard Panner Baroque Popsike & Fuzz Thread Starter

Yeah, I couldn't figure out which Manfred Mann song. Anybody wanna give it a try?

I did add Manfred Mann's - "Semi-Detached Suburban Mr. James" to the General Influence list.

  24. Andy Partridge:

Andy: “ ‘Your Gold Dress’ was the first things written for 25 O'Clock. I came up with the stupidest riff in the history of riffs and thought it was spot on.” Dave: “We borrowed Nicky Hopkins sound from ‘She's A Rainbow’.” Andy: “He made Satanic Majesties - The Stones would have fallen apart at that time without Nicky Hopkins. He is ‘We Love You’. One of my favorite ever albums.”

Put all these song suggestions together. Could make for a good theme box set for a label such as Rhino.
